HP DV5 Laptop and Windows 7 - driver issues

Patrick C

New member
:DDownloaded Windows 7 from BitTorrent. I started in the evening of 12/31/08 and it continued over night. I have the following Laptop configured as follows:
Specifications of my present Notebook.
Model: HP Pavilion Entertainment PC -> dv5-1125nr
Ram: 4 Gigs; HD: 250 Gigs --> C:\ 125 G -> Windows Vista 64-bit; D:\ 84G -> My Documents; E:\ 40G ->Windows 7
Video: 256 Mb dedicated and up to 2 G; 15.4" Display, Modem, Wireless G, Network, TV Interface, Media Card reader, etc.
DVD/CD RW, Webcam

Results: Windows 7 installed without a hitch. After installation of Windows Vista 32-bit drivers it functions perfectly. It appears to be a very peppy system with really neat improvements. Windows One Care live won't install because it does not view Windows 7 as a 'verifiable Microsoft Windows' Operating system.

I have been a part of the Windows Feedback Panel for at least 4 maybe 5 years. When Vista was in Beta testing I was chosen by Microsoft to be part of that group. Unfortunately in my view I was testing Vista on a Machine that ran Windows XP very well but was not capable of Hardware rigors of running Windows Vista.

I have tried for about the last six months to become part of the Beta testing for Windows 7, especially because I think I might have a better idea of what to do.

I am interested to hear things concerning this stuff. God's Speed

Hello Lappydog -
All of the capabilities and some that must be new work in my Windows 7 installation. I would suggest that if you haven't, that You might want to go to the HP website for the dv5 drivers. When I went to the that site and selected the Vista 32-bit drivers, everything worked well. Prior to that the blue wireless light at the right upper part of the keyboard, didn't show as blue(indicating works correctly) until I downloaded and installed those drivers.
Next I noticed that when I ran the default balanced power mode -- I hope I said that correctly -- that the display dims after no key use for a some time -- then brightens when you start using the computer.
I am not sure I have helped You. Finally I also installed all video drivers as well. If you need more detail I will have to get that for you. I am glad to help You anyway I can.
Patrick

@Patrick
I already visited the site and updated, although after W7 install I had no issues but power management(No screen dimming). I will wait for the next beta and see what happens and try to trouble shoot from there if the problem stiil exists. Was just asking thinking you may have had the problem too and it was a w7 issue.
Thanks for the reply

Great looking site here with good info. thanks to all

John - I am not sure how to do this environment. When a person goes to the HP home page there three main headings at the top of the page. When a person selects Support & Drivers the two choices are (1st) Download drivers and software(and firmware) - Select this one and use 32-bit Vista driver(s). (2nd) See Support and Troubleshooting information. The drivers I chose as most important (1) Driver Audio - IDT High Definition Audio Codec driver ver. 6.10.6087.0A - 11/08 (2) Driver Graphics - ATI Mobility Radeon Graphics Driver ver. 8.533.1.0A - 11/08 (3) Driver Network - Realtek Ethernet NIC Driver 6.208.0729.2008A - 11/08 ; Atheros Wireless LAN Driver 2.00B 6/08;(4) Driver Storage - Realtek Card Reader Driver 6.0.6000.20109A (5) Operating System Enhancements and QFE's - AMD USB Filter Driver ver. 1.07A 8/08; (6) AMD AHCI Compatible Raid Controller Driver 3.1 - 6/08.
Using these drivers and the regular install of Windows 7 caused the Windows 7 software to work correctly. Also I wasn't paying attention to the dimming effect that now takes place in Windows 7. I will be more attentive to help out.

That is beautiful. You gave an accurate description on how to go and where to go. Using the Snipping tool you can also take screen shots (and partial screen shots, using either rectangular mode or free form mode) and buttress this so you not only tell them where to go but show them where to go, as well as the *exact* drivers that you downloaded....

In the meantime I am splitting this off into its own topic - look for HP DV5 laptop as the title.

John & Lappydog - You guys probably already thought of this but When I installed drivers with Vista installed on C:\ when I installed drivers for the install of Windows 7 on the E:\ - I had to watch the installation process & at the right time, I had to change the path statement for the install to "e:\...\ from the normal c:\..\ . more later if You need it. All drivers had beed installed and still have power saving issue with dimming.
Thanks for your time and the reply.

On a side note...... with this being the HP DV5 topic now, I ran across a new bios version 12-2008(for the touchy volume slider) on the HP site. I installed the new bios with the vista winflash utilitie on W7 with no issues.
Looking back it was a dumb move flashing the bios with a beta release and vista program but then again I feel good about windows 7 SO FAR.

See How to use the Snipping Tool in Vista - Vista Forums - a tutorial over at the sister Vista x64 site - it has everything you need to make it work, because the board software there and here is identical (and rightly so, as both are maintained by the same group of fine folks).

The power management problem I have been having is with my microsoft wireless mouse. I pull the usb adapter for the mouse and power management works great.
Windows 7 automatic updates is not bringing up the HID non-user input data filter update to fix the problem. I download the HID non-user input data filter here http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/ViewBasket.aspx, now I just have to fiqure out where to put it or how to install it.
Any ideas?

Good Morning Lappydog -
I went to the link in your message. I allowed it to install and saved it as a Favorite in Internet Explorer. I hope that is what You were asking. Also - It was somewhat laborious - but I went back to my Vista Install Listed all hardware in the Device Manager - names, versions, and driver dates. This allowed me to know for sure that the install of Vista Premium was equivalent - at least - to my Windows 7 Install. Let me know if I can assist You in any way. All the while we are learning together. God's Speed to You. Patrick

Too bad microsoft cant make it simple to use their own wireless mouse with their operating system (searching I see this was a problem with vista also, but auto update fixed it) , I know this is a beta, maybe the HID will auto updat in the next W7 version.

:D Lappydog - Windows 7 ATIRadeon Drivers have been posted to the AMD/ATI site, look at the posts on this site, those will lead you there. Once installed they work good. This beta of Windows 7 works much better than when I tested Vista. One very inmportant point to that last comment is that the dv5-11s5nr I am using has alot better resources. It occurs to me that the people that say that Vista is a sub-standard system are just not unwilling to consider that sufficent RAM as well as sufficent Video Capabilities are crucial in a well performing PC. I noticed also that the HID compliant mouse had loaded itself in my Device Manager - nothing special required. Good Hunting:D:D
