You could hide the desktop icons instead with them still being displayed in the taskbar toolbar.
Right click on the desktop and click on View and Show Desktop Items (uncheck). You can still add shortcuts to the desktop to add to the toolbar, with them still being hidden on the desktop.

The other folders won't have all those folders that the desktop folder had - computer, etc....
