How to Upload to Windows Live SkyDrive from Windows 7 Desktop​


   Information
If you have a windows live account then you'll love this!
If you don't, get one, the free 25GB is amazing :D

I'll show you how to set up your PC to upload your files directly to Windows SkyDrive through the 'send to' context menu.
   Warning
SkyDrive will soon be called OneDrive instead.

[SIZE=+1]1.[/SIZE] Firstly you'll need the free starter edition of Gladinet cloud Desktop

[SIZE=+1]2.[/SIZE] When it's finished downloading, install it. You'll see that it's added a new network location in Computer
NOTE: During installation, please use a drive letter towards the end of the alphabet.

[SIZE=+1]3.[/SIZE] Double click the new entry and you can set up SkyDrive

[SIZE=+1]4.[/SIZE] As we're using SkyDrive, pick that from the drop down list and name your drive.

[SIZE=+1]6.[/SIZE] Choose whether you want the directory to open when finish and click on finish,

[SIZE=+1]7.[/SIZE] Once it's finished you'll see SkyDrive's directory in Windows Explorer is the same in web-based SkyDrive.

  • You can now drag & drop items up to 50MB into the folders and it'll upload instantly to SkyDrive.
  • Next, we're going to add the folders to the 'send to' context menu.
[SIZE=+1]8.[/SIZE] Open an explorer windows and in the address bar type;

  • You'll see all the entries to the send to context menu here.
[SIZE=+1]9.[/SIZE] Open another explorer windows and navigate to your SkyDrive folder. For example, i'm going to use my Pictures folder. Right click and drag the folder you want in the send to context menu to create a shortcut.

  • You can rename the new shortcut if you want.
  • Now, when you want to send some files to SkyDrive, right click the item, go to send to and then choose your new entry.

The good news is on the Gladinet could Desktop program itself. I was wondering how to see files and folders of different sizes transferred from the hard drive onto the 7 installation on the Virtual Box where this is no direct access to internal until trying this one out! Good Catch! :D

hello, quick question....

once I drop files onto the virtual drive for uploading to skydrive, does it occupy space in my physical drive? :confused:

No doubt a temporary file will be used whilst uploading. Once uploaded i've not noticed anything on my PC. It goes straight to SkyDrive. :)
Not sure why the capacity of the Gladinet drive stays consistent with my OS drive though :confused:

I up'd 1.23GB (music) last night onto SkyDrive through Gladinet. It didn't leave 1.23GB anywhere on my hard drive that's for sure. Are you sure that doesn't mean program files taking up too much space :confused:

What you are seeing is a virtual drive representing the folder on the live.com server itself. The icons seen represent the files being uploaded using only a few killobytes at the most depending on how much is being uploaded onto the server.

This works for a 7 or other installation on the SUN Virtual Box but won't on the XP mode or 7 installed onto a vhd there it seems. For the XP mode that's a simple direct transfers since the RC now has full access to usb flash drives as well as your internal drives while any custom install of Vista or 7 on a vhd is limited to an rw disk in the dvd drive used.

Apparently there's a newer version just released since you first posted this now seen. The 3.0.4 version is now listed at Downloads - VirtualBox You see the prompting for this when the VBox is opened for the first time of the day or night when you start your system up.

This certainly bailed me out on the SUN Portable Virtual Box 7 install to vhd on the usb flash drive here. Files I wanted there as well as the 7 install on vhd by way of the MS Virtual PC RC now seen are easily transferred from the main dirve. Only the XP mode has direct access to anything other then the dvd drive used for installation or running a live cd of some type there.

After I followed:How to Upload to Windows SkyDrive from Windows 7 Desktop, my hotmail freezes, ie I can see that I have e-mail, but I cannot read it. I'm using Firefox 3.5.2.
There is no problem reading my e-mail on another computer.
Hoew can I unfreeze hotmail?

The entire process works through IE 8 not other browsers since you going through Windows Live Hotmail. Plus if you have the Live messenger added on that will bind things up at first while that loads when first going to look at the mail or simply login there.

Even with the automatic logon and automatic sign in unchecked here I still have to wait a bit until the first item finishes loading with a red X when not signing into messenger itself. If you added that on that would be another reason for seeing it bind up a bit there.

It works great! The one thing to remember with this is trying it with any files that are too large to begin with. For small files like images or some custom wav files for assigning sounds to Windows functions the transfers are practically instantaneous! :D
