Yeah, that's a little light and might cause some issues I would guess.

I'm running a Core2 quad CPU here, although only 2.40Ghz, but 8GB RAM.

Installed norton beta. while quick scan, it eats memory in breakfast:

just to clear things up...eset smart security is NOT NOD32. NOD32 is the anti-virus program and there are no problems with it on windows 7 (it has one of, if not the, lightest footprint of any av program). The rest of the security suite may have issues (i don't know because i don't use it) If you're gonna talk about NOD32 then talk about NOD32 not Eset Smart Security

Ok, I'll give the AV a try, although the smart security is NOD32 + Firewall.
The AV engine is exactly the same.

Your first screenie of the Norton memory drainage. Why would that surprise you or be a bad thing? It's caching files to make it run faster. Any smart program uses caching. As soon as the scan is done, Norton releases the memory and uses only about 15mb as you have shown in you last screenshot. And Norton never auto scans while you are working. It will wait until the cpu is doing nothing. That's the opposite of dumb.
Why is everybody so fixated on memory usage? You don't put in 8gb, just to sit there, right?
Programs are supposed to use the extra headroom to their/your benefit.
As long as they release it when they're done.
Just want to know, is that the Norton BETA sec suite? or only the AV?
(hence again, BETA)

I'll post back my findings on NOD32 AV only.

i m using norton sec suite beta. It didnt detected a single malware on a heavily infected pc. I said the engine is dumb because it can detect and remove only those malware which are there in its update database. it highly lacks hueristics. i've got 14 days to test norton. however, so far.. not impressed.

FYI:
The title of this thread is wrong. 2009 products are not yet Win7 compatible.
The Heuristic engine driver will be shut off in win7 due to incompatibility.
Symantec will have a compatible version when Win7 hits the market.
I've written a complaint to Symantec, that it is a ridiculous policy because Win7 is already released through technet, and people want to use their AV suites.

The Beta 10 programs are so called compatible, because the Heuristic isn't working. To make a fair comparison, sadly we need to wait until 2009 is compatible or 2010 is finished.
Any computer tech knows you should never compare Beta with finished products.

Going to install NOD32 v3.0 AV only now. I'll post back soon.

Norton is getting poor. LOL. It shows they are so careless about the newest Windows which is already installed on millions of pc and they dont have a compatible AV yet? That's shame I guess most of the AV has launched win7 compatible. Why is norton left behind? Also, i don't say NOD32 4 is God of AV. But, the difference is .... NOD32 4 works.

NOD#@ after almost 2hrs it's on 89% done, constantly between 90% and 100% cpu.
Laptop hardly usable. Utter cr*p.

Up to now it found 3 of the 5 threats I deliberately put in place.
Hope it finds the last two keygen trojans in the 11% left to go.

I'll post screenshots, if it ever finishes.

NOD32

Well, here I go.

First thing I notice and think is a bit funny is this:
NOD32 4 = 3.0 ???



During normal use, my CPU is between 2% and 20%.
Note that the memory use is at 472mb!



I updated the definitions and got started with smart scan at 13:25hr.

During the scan my CPU rocketed to between 90% and 100%, with an occasional drop to 50%.
The scan rendered my system almost useless.
After 20% of the scan, the memory use already grew to 647mb!



After 3 hours and 18 minutes the scan was almost done at 99%, or so I thought.
Memory use was at 814mb!!, That's a growth of 342mb!!!
The graph shows it was even higher before.



Then to my horror, I found out that in those 3 1/2 hours it only had scanned my C: partition.
It still had to scan my D: partition.

The ordeal finally finished after 5 hours and 31 minutes of not being able to use my system.

Nod found 4 of the 5 trojans I planted.
To be fair, I went to the remaining file and did a scan by hand and NOD did recognize it then, and deleted it.
Don't know why it missed it in the smart scan.



After seeing this I don't think I have to elaborate on the fact that I am somewhat disappointed. :huh:

Tomorrow I will do exactely the same thing with Norton 2010 BETA, and post the results.

I am using Norton 2009 for about 6 months now and am loving it.

For me it works well and doesn't slow down my system.

Trying vipre AV. So far so good.

Norton sucks, got rid of it years ago and have been using AVG since. Worked right off on windows 7, and have been using it for over 2 months now. I believe that norton really is a virus. Just my .02

You can't judge something you got rid of years ago.
Don't understand why people feel the need to give negative comments without any valid arguments to substantiate it.

That AVG is working fine with Win7 is valuable information.
Maybe you can elaborate on the workings of AVG, and maybe even do some testing with screenshots for us?
That would be useful and substantiated information, other people can benefit from.

Read a little bit back to my test of NOD32 on my laptop
At least I gave it a fair try on my laptop.

Regretfully on my laptop NOD32 is useless, because it uses up all my CPU.

I will post my findings on Norton 2010 Beta here soon.
Tested it but haven't had time to post the results and screenshots yet.

My CPU is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor @ 2.0ghz
ESET NOD32 was running on two (2) cores.
Now, how did you get your results? IDK!
