Computer - Pin to Taskbar

How to Pin Computer to the Windows 7 Taskbar

   Information
This will show you how to pin Computer to the Windows 7 taskbar as a separate icon instead of it being pinned as a Jump list item in the default pinned Window Explorer taskbar icon.

Default.jpg

   Note
When you have both the default Windows Explorer icon to the left and this Computer icon to the right of it, then each time you click on the Computer icon on the taskbar it will open another separate new window of Computer. Clicking on the Windows Explorer icon will only open the one window instance.

   Warning
To avoid issues with other pinned "explorer" type shortcuts from displaying their opened windows in the thumbnail previews of whatever pinned "explorer" type shortcut is on the farthest left of the taskbar, be sure that the default pinned Windows Explorer taskbar icon is dragged to the left of this pinned Computer icon on the taskbar, and that any other pinned "explorer" type icon is dragged to the right of this Computer icon.

It works on the 32bit Vista Home Premium as well. First you have to clear the check box in the personalization and then copy and paste the blue colored icon onto the desktop itself before dragging onto the quick launch bar there.

Hello Hitcher, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Strange, it still works just fine for me from the taskbar after I delete the ZIP and shortcut from the desktop. Right click on the pinned Computer icon on the taskbar, then right click on Computer in the jump list and click on Properties. Under the Shortcut tab, does it stil have the location in blue below there?

%windir%\explorer.exe shell:MyComputerFolder

I've just hit a problem with this and I'm hoping someone out there can help me out.

When I first set it up clicking on it would open up My Computer as normal and this would then become a new folder in the taskbar. Clicking it again would open up another folder in the taskbar making it nice and easy to switch between multiple folders. All fine.
Now here's where the problem starts. I accidently unpinned it from the taskbar today and had to re-do it but now whenever I click on it it doesn't open up a new folder for me to use, it just stays focused on My Computer. Clicking it again simply minimises it meaning I can no longer have multiple instances open for use.

Please help.

Hello Hitcher,

Do you have your taskbar set to group buttons (always combine)? It should never have more than one button or icon on the taskbar though, but should open multiple instances of the Computer window for each time you click on the taskbar icon when set to group buttons.

If the above does not help, then try redownloading the shortcut, place it somewhere you want to store it at on the C: drive, then pin it to the taskbar.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Yes, I've always grouped them. Goodness only knows why it's not working like it did before.

I have found I can open more folders by using the 'slide' action on My Computer to open up a new instance but it was much easier before clicking it would open a new folder on the rightside of the taskbar, and then clicking it again would simple open another new folder that would get grouped next to the first one.

Hitcher, I'm not sure why it's doing that as well. It still works the original way for. You might just unpin and delete your current Computer shortcut, then replace it with a new downloaded copy of it from here to see if it still does the same.
