Boot time

Although they haven’t set it as an official objective, it seems Microsoft have set an unofficial target of achieving a sub 15 seconds boot time with Windows 7. On the Windows 7 Engineering blog Michael Fortin stats that:

In the lab, a very good system is one that boots in under 15 seconds.

The fastest I’ve ever managed to get a Windows system to boot is just over a minute, so I’d be amazed if Microsoft do achieve a sub 15 second boot time for Windows 7. I don’t think they will be able to do this alone and will probably need hardware and software manufacturers to play ball.

Do you think it’s achievable?

A sub 15 second boot time would be awesome, but I just cant see it being achievable out of the lab.

I may even consider shutting my PC down now and again with that sort of boot speed ;)

Maybe in the future but now; 15 seconds is too much to hope for!

Less than 15 seconds, cold boot? Maybe if they use some kind of re-writable ram chip for the under the hood business at boot time. I'm sure PC's in the future will be faster than 15 seconds.

Instant on is good.

Now if we could get the pc to anticipate what we were going to do/open/manage, that would be a trick ;)

sub 15 sec boot....

maybe achievable with an SSD, a 10.000rpm 32mb SATA 2 RAPTOR, a highly OCed CPU (or a core I7 chip), super fast RAM, & W7 .......maybe ???

all less powerful rigs will never hit that target no matter how well the new OS is coded.

its a continual ''work in progress''....
A 15-sec boot would be awesome. I think we'll need Quad-Core to so or highly OC'ed Dual Cores.

Hi, I dont know if I should post my problem here, if I am in the wrong spot maybe someone will direct me to the right spot, anyway long story short the other day I could not get into windows ,I tried everything and in the end I stuck my windows cd in to see if it would fix it and lo and behold it did in a few mins ,prob was that it lost the default boot os anyway its fixed now but my os's are now called windows 7 and vista RECOVERED, ok I can live with that, but since the fix it is taking forever to boot into either system, so I ticked the box in the msconfig section[OS BOOT INFORMATION] to see what was happening, and after it loads the drivers it just seems to sit there for ages and then at the last min before it goes into windows screen I see a few lines like[ file system clean], as if it had being checking ALL my discs first before boot, might there be a TUT on how to stop what ever its doing that I can't find and if so if someone could show me the way that would be great THANKS.

I use a Magnum.
If I understood well, you have enabled both detecthal and 2 CPUs in msconfig.

To fix that, boot from your Windows 7 DVD and select repair computer.
Then use the command prompt option under repair, to enter command prompt.

In command prompt, type:

bcdedit /deletevalue {default} numproc

...and reboot to see if its fixed. if this doesn't fix your problem, you can also try typing

bcdedit /deletevalue {default} detecthal
