Solved StarCraft fix holy cow!

So there I was, stuck playing starcraft in crappy colors yet again, as it has always been during my beta testing of windows 7. For what ever reason, I decided to leave screen resolution dialog box open and what do you know- starcraft runs with its beautiful original colors.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about:

Symptoms:
Starcraft runs with bright turquoise colors everywhere in the menu system. It looks rather psychedelic.

On vista, it intermittently happened, on win7 it happens every time after the 1.16.00 patch installed.

Fix:
Simply open up your screen resolution window before playing, and leave it open. Doing so will result in perfect colors ever time. The same for vista, just open up personalize. I have no idea why this works, but I've tested it many many times- you just open the window- nothing else.

I've reported it to MS and Blizzard- blizzard quickly blew me off though with a "WINDOWS 7 IS NOT SUPPORTED" email.

Hmm... nope, don't care about spelling.:D

enjoy SC lol!

I too searched for a fix forever, but never found it. Glad I could help some people... I'll probly post this elsewhere for others to see.

If you care to know how i found it:
I run multiple monitors most of the time, however starcraft would run in ultra terrible colors if i had more than one graphics card active. (these colors were much worse than the normal menu messup, they had that problem and were what seemed inverted). Anyway, I commonly opened my display settings, shut two monitors off, then played. I just happened to leave it open by accident one day, started up the game and it looked great.

Tried it a few more times and noticed scr res was open, horray!

Proper Fix Tested and working

This is one way to guarantee starcraft works without opening certain windows beforehand etc. Right click on the starcraft.exe in \Program Files\Starcraft. Go to the compatibility tab in properties and tick every box under settings: All of these relate to graphics so tick em all! Do not tick run in compatibility mode though cause then sc won't run can't find a font file somewhere :sarc:. Anwho hope this helps!

doesnt work

Sadly, nope... this does not work for me. The window still needs to be open. I am still running 16.0 - I saw that they released a 16.1 recently, maybe this is why it's working for you? I'll have to try updating it later.

Maybe. I am running the windows 7 build 7000 64bit with starcraft patched to 16.1 and a 9800gtx. Strange that my fix won't work for you. I was having exactly the same problem. Does your graphics card have drivers for vista 64bit/32bit those are the ones most likely to work with 7?

Wow, excellent post. I just went to pop in SC - BW and wow, I thought I was going to have to give up. Tried disabling all Aero and everything with still no luck. I brought up resolution box and bang, everything is fine.

I also had no luck check marking all the setting except run in compatibility mode. It would work for 1 second then the crappy colors came back. running 16.1

Thanks for the excellent thread

One trick that has always worked for me was going from 32-bit colors to 16-bit colors. The steps are:

1. Right-click on the Desktop, choose Screen Resolution.
2. Click on Advanced Settings (next to Orientation)
3. Click on the Monitor tab, then choose High Color (16-bit) from the colors dropdown.
4. Click on Apply.
5. Confirm the display settings prompt.

You'll lose the fancy Aero effects, but Starcraft should now work fine. Of course, after you're done playing you can always switch back to 32-bit color mode.

Bonus tip: If you're playing Starcraft and the colors get messed up (mini-map goes black, etc), simply Alt-tab out of Starcraft and Alt-tab back in.

Hi,

So i have Windows 7 64 bit build 7077.

Your different Fix(screen resolution changer / 16 bit etc...) works when the game is in none scaling mode...but i have a widescreen. But when i use maintain aspect ratio from the ATI CCC, the 4:3 is ok, but color are messed up again....

Any solutions?

just fyi

Actually i have a widescreen monitor and 19"s with the widescreen as my main. its not the screen size, this fix WORKED on any monitor. the problem is that its not working on newer builds. I noticed around build 7068 my "fix" stopped working.

I've currently reverted to 7000 again, because of stability issues with the latest builds, if I were you I'd wait until RC1 rolls out. Let me know if you discover anything though!

Personally i would run it in a virtual PC... I like to play the ultimate doom games once in a while anyway.

I going to look around and see if you can still run SC in a window (latest version), perhaps it wont have this error then.

I have tried all the fixes suggested in this thread, and my Starcraft is still all wrong coloured.

HOWEVER, it does, rarely, work fine. There's no pattern to it tho. I could be trying out the suggestions from this thread and it would work (once) and then I'd try to run it without any compatibility settings and it would be OK again (once).

So far I haven't been able to get the game to display correctly "two times in a row", that is, if I get it to work and exit the game, not once have I been able to get it instantly back up with the correct colours.

Oh, and I'm running the latest Starcraft version as well.

Same here, I've tried everything said in this thread and nothing works... I'm using build 7100 if that matters...
