Sorry ekopaxus, I beleive that the classic start menu may have been consigned to the annals of history by MS.

Being bi - using best of two worlds:
  • Windows 7 start menu with "last opened programs" and "jump lists" AND
  • "Classic menu emulation"
(Excuse me for my bad English)

  • Right mouse click on taskbar -> Toolbars -> New toolbar
  • Point to: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Startmenu\Programs
  • Right mouse click on taskbar -> unlock taskbar
  • Right mouse click in taskbar on dotted delimiter -> disable "Show text" and disable "Show title", enable "Big symbols"
  • Right mouse click in taskbar on dotted delimiter -> Open folder
  • Choose a link and change icon; e.g. change "Send feedback" link into green symbol out of c:\windows\ehome\ehres.dll
  • Drag dotted delimiter to the left till changed icon appears
  • Drag changed icon to the most left position
  • Drag dotted delimiter to the right till only one icon remains
  • Drag left dotted delimiter beside the start button to the right site till new symbol bar suddenly jumps to the left.
  • Drag dotted delimiter to the left till only one icon remains
  • Right mouse click on taskbar -> lock taskbar
Open Windows Explorer.
Move all links and folders from:
C:\User\[Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Startmenu\Programs
to:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Startmeni\Programs
(Because first folder includes the "User menu" links while second folder includes "All user menu" links)

See here... (German)

I missed something in this I think. I applied both methods and found I then needed two clicks to get to programs, when before I just needed one click of "All programs"??

The only click I need is the first click on the start orb, then the final click for the program needed. I've also renamed the Documents to Programs as in the web sites info.
Makes using the start menu much easier, to have a mouseover flow through, to open menus without clicking though them.

Sorry, I should not have said click. I am genuinely interested in playing with this. If I have it right - click the orb, HOVER over Documents, or whatever you have called it, then hover over programs. Whereas normally I just click the orb, and all programs to get the same thing?

We are talking nano seconds here, so it is not speed I am loking at, just interest.

I followed the website info and it works.
One click on the start Orb, mouse over Documents, Programs, (through program folders tree to) Utilities, CCleaner. One click to open program.
Two clicks in total to open ANY program in the menu tree.

With the default menu, click orb, click All Programs, click Utilities, Click CCleaner folder, click CCleaner, to start program.
5 Clicks in total.

Classic Menu only needs 2 clicks as folders open as mouse drags across them.
Also Classic Menu shows ALL of your menu listing tree of folders, to me that's much easier, being able to see all of the items at once.

It may depend on how many programs you have installed, if you only have a few, the default menu would show them all. If like me you have lots of programs installed then an open tree like menu is much easier to use.

Only a hover and 3 clicks for me. I don't have a Ccleaner folder. - I have dragged all my .exe's out and deleted the folders. one click on the Orb. Hover for All programs. Click Utilities, click Ccleaner.exe (shortcut). I would say, for speed, three clicks would beat 4 hovers and two clicks anytime!

Just a thought but dreamescene, sidebar and other things can be ported from vista to 7, does anyone know which files would need to be edited or replaced to possibly enable this from vista...?? if you understand what i mean? It could be possible.. im not sure.. it needs to be tried.

I've been using the different ways to show the start menu and unawaves method is very good, it gives you a classic menu flow without altering the default menu which is unaltered.
This is exactly what I wanted, the old type of flow menu, but still benefiting from the new menu features.

Thanks unawave.:D

I have been looking for something that would change the start menu to the classic one for some time, however my luck has been limited. The closest that I could find is CSMenu (CSMenu Official Site), however it is not the same. I can't change any of the settings that I can for the real classic start menu. I also use the windows classic theme and the colour of CSMenu doesn't match the classic theme. I recently discovered a program called classic shell (Welcome to Classic Shell). This program is the best thing I have ever used. You can actually have your classic start menu back! Most programs that you find tell you the same thing, but this is the real deal! Not only does it give you the start menu, but it allows you to change settings for Windows Explorer. Every feature is optional. PLEASE try this program and you WILL be pleased. Email me at {EMAIL REMOVED} so I can know how popular this program is.

IT IS THE REAL DEAL!!!
