Installing and sharing an HP Laserjet 1020 on Win7 x64

After many unsuccessful attempts to get this printer installed and shared with other Vista and/or Windows 7 machines on the network, I finally worked out a procedure that works reliably. Since I couldn’t find this info all in one place anywhere else, I thought I’d share.

  • Get rid of old unsuccessful installation attempts to install the drivers: Open Print Managment (type “print managment” in the “search for programs and files” box on the start menu). Right click any instance of HP 1020 drivers and click “Remove Driver Package”. If it says that the printer is in use and can’t be deleted, restart your computer and then try again.
  • Download the Vista x64 drivers from: Select software and drivers*
From the two available choices, use the Print Driver Package, not the Plug and Play Package.
  • Make sure the printer is NOT CONNECTED. Run the driver installation program, making note of the folder to which it installs the files (usually “C:\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard\Laserjet 1020_1022 drivers”)
  • Connect the printer. Windows 7 should detect the printer but then claim that it was NOT installed successfully.
  • At this point, the HP 1020 should show up as a device in the “Devices and Printers” window. Right click on it, and go to properties.
  • On the General tab, click “Make changes” (or whatever the button near the bottom says… I can’t recreate it once the printer is installed properly). This will open up a second “Properties” window where the Drivers tab now has the “Update driver” button active instead of grayed out.
  • Click update drivers, then select “Browse my computer…” and navigate to the folder from step 3, then press OK.
  • Once this completes, the HP 1020 should be fully functional on your Windows 7 x64 machine.

Now comes the trickier part, getting it to share properly across your network.

  • Go to “Devices and Printers”, right click on the HP 1020, and choose “Printer Properties” (not just “Properties”, they’re different). Go to the “Sharing” tab and make sure that “Share this printer” and “Render print jobs on …” are both checked.
  • If you are sharing with an x86 Vista or Windows 7 computer, make sure that you’ve installed the x86 drivers by pressing “Additional drivers” from the printer’s “Sharing” tab. Click the x86 check box, then press OK. In the next window, navigate to a folder containing the x86 drivers for the HP 1020 (you should be able to download them from the HP website and unzip/install them to a folder, then choose that folder).
  • Here’s the tricky part… I’m not sure why this works, but it does. It seems like the HP Print Monitor disrupts sharing of the printer with other Vista/Win 7 systems on the network and causes them to just hang in the queue. It must be disabled. Here’s how:
  • Open the Registry editor (Press start, and type “regedit” into the “Search for programs and files” box).
  • Navigate to the following key:
“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors” and then delete the "HPLJ1020LM" folder.
  • Close the registry editor, and then in Windows explorer, navigate to the folder “C:\windows\system32”. Rename the file “ZLhp1020.dll” to something like “ZLhp1020old.dll”.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Now you’re ready to install the shared printer from the networked computers. IF YOU’VE ALREADY TRIED TO INSTALL THE DRIVERS ON THE OTHER COMPUTERS, COMPLETELY REMOVE THEM ACCORDING TO THE STEP 1 IN THE PREVIOUS SECTION BEFORE PROCEEDING.
  • If you are using “Homegroups”, the networked Win7 computer should recognize the printer and immediately give you the option to install it. If not, or if you are sharing with a Vista computer, use the Network browser to navigate to the shared printer and double-click it. You should get a prompt to install the driver. Click OK or whatever.
  • If all is well, you should have a working, shared HP 1020. One thing I noticed, however, is it doesn’t seem like the manual “double sided printing” feature of the HP driver works when the HP Print Monitor has been disabled. Nothing I can do about that… have to wait for HP to release Win7 x64 drivers, I guess.

Whew...Hopefully I got all that right! Good luck.

Hi all,

I am here to share my idea to install hp laserjet 1020 on windows 7.

There no driver for windows 7 till mid November.

I have installed device driver for laserjet 1020 on windwos 7, here is the method for installing driver in windows 7 for laserjet 1020.

1. 1st of all download laserjet 1020 basic printer driver for windows vista. you can down it from this link

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=bi-58554-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=439320&os=2093&lang=en

2. after downloading driver for vista extract it even exe file with winrar and then go to device manager and then HP laserjet 1020 which is shown as unkown device and right click on it and after that update driver

3. and after that go to folder where extarct vista driver exe and select it .

note. i did not run exe file.

Thanks for reading. hope it will work for you

4. and it will be installed without any problem like me.

Success!

Mind you, I did have the same problem as Florindez. I then downloaded the 32 bit version of the drivers instead of the 64 bit version and then it worked.

Thanks Scott.

Sharing my solution - hope it'll help somebody)
I have a 'server' with hp 1020 and windows XP (x32 course) and a laptop with windows 7, so i shared printer from the server and tried to connect to it from my laptop - windows 7 said that it can't find drivers in the internet and asked me to show the way to .inf file.
The file HPLJ1020.INF (and some others) are simply extracted from
HTML:
 http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=bi-58588-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=439320&os=2100&lang=en
with winrar ( i have 3.80 version).

So here is another way to install this printer ))

Thanks. This method works for WinXP as well.

[Added later]. In fact, it doesn't for very long. After printing a couple of pages "Enable bidirectional support" checkbox (Properties | Ports) gets cleared, and then printing stops working - even locally. Repeating the procedure doesn't help. Here's another method (source):

  • NOTE: Do this on the machine connected to the printer.
  • Run gpdedit.msc
  • Go to “Local Computer Policies\Administrative Templates\Printers”
    • Set the setting “Allow print spooler to accept client connections” to “Enabled”
  • Go to “User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Printers\”
    • Set the setting “Point and Print Restrictions” to “Disabled”
  • Close the Group Policy Editor
  • Go into the Printers and Faxes control panel, right click on the printer and hit properties.
  • Click the “Ports” tab
  • Uncheck “Enable Bidirectional Printing”
  • Close the Printer panels/windows
  • Run a command line, type in “gpupdate /force”, and hit enter
Perhaps it works for Vista/Win7 too. Seems to be a more simple way.

Printing with workaround I described above breaks after switching the printer off and then on again - even if you did that while computer your LJ1020 is connected to was off itself (that's funny enough 'cause rebooting itself doesn't break printing). To make it work back (again - on the computer connected to the printer):
  • Go to the printer properties
  • Check Enable Bidirectional Printing option, click Apply
  • Print a page on the printer
  • Uncheck Enable Bidirectional Printing option, click ОK
Network printing works again! A bit annoying, but much more less than other methods I tried.

Hi people!
I follow the install instructions, but my LJ1020 is still not working right. I'm running win 7 x64, and have a brand new PC. Problem is that when i print both sided documents, it prints one side, and then won't print the other one, or prints it after a 15 minutes "break". Also, very often, almost always, it is making large breakes between pages, for like 2 mins or even more. It is driving me crazy :(
Has anyone similar problems?, or knows how to solve this?

Thanks in advance!
p.s. Sorry for my poor english, I'm form Croatia.

To use double-side printing, bidirectional printing should be enabled. But if you enable it, network printing won't work. You can install another copy of LJ1020 on printer's host (i. e. the computer LJ1020 connected to) and enable bidirectional printing for it. Then the 1st copy of LJ1020 (where bidirectional printing is off) will be used for network printing and the 2nd copy of LJ1020 (where bidirectional printing is on) will be used for local printing, including double-side.
To use double-side printing on shared LJ1020 from the network you can use FinePrint.
