You really don't need to open the case if the thing is under warranty.
Even a single error reported during memory diagnostics is reason enough to justify your request for completely new hardware (they can troubleshoot this machine on their own time), let alone "hundreds of thousands of errors".
For what it's worth, I'd agree with your assessment - the problem is probably caused by thermal or other transients, as opposed to downright bad RAM. However, the beautiful thing about a warranty is that it's Somebody Else's Problem to work out the hardware reasons
