SonicWALL SSL-VPN NetExtender

I couldn't find anything about this specific product, so I thought I'd post. SonicWALL's SSL-VPN product contains a stripped down version of their VPN client called NetExtender, which installs through a web browser.

Basically, the NetExtender install fails, either through the browser or the standalone installer package available from the SonicWALL partner site. At first I was running into the signed driver problem, so I ran this command:

bcdedit /set testsigning no

and rebooted my machine. After that, I think the install got a little farther. The NetExtender installer leaves behind a log at C:\program files\SonicWALL\SSL-VPN\NetExtender\NetExtender.dbg:

2009/01/16 14:10:03, NetExtender Core: Proc-0xD38:Thr-0xB0C: Error: Install NIC - UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices failed

2009/01/16 14:10:03, NetExtender Core: Proc-0xD38:Thr-0xB0C: Error: Could not install the NIC driver, error code = 0x65E.

2009/01/16 14:10:03, NetExtender Core: Proc-0xD38:Thr-0xB0C: Status update: statCode = 0x4040301, stepData = 0

2009/01/16 14:10:03, NetExtender Core: Proc-0xD38:Thr-0xB0C: Status update callback.

2009/01/16 14:10:03, Fail to install NetExtender driver! Error code: 67371777
2009/01/16 14:10:03, NetExtender Core: Proc-0xD38:Thr-0xB0C: Status updated.

2009/01/16 14:10:03, Fail to install NetExtender driver!

My interpretation of the above is that the driver simple won't work with Windows 7. Has anyone gotten it to work on their system? And if so, how?

I have the same trouble. Originally I thought it was due to an old firmware on the ssl-vpn appliance and resulting client, but even after it was fully updated I get the same result.

any help with this would be greatly appreciated. the most recent version claims to be compatible with vista, but i haven't had a chance to test it.

I can upload the standalone installer for the client if it would help to resolve the issue.

I have installed the Windows 7, 64 bit beta version using the upgrade from Vista Home Premium 64 bit. After the update, when I tried to run Sonic Wall client it wanted to do an install. I have tried the standalone client installer for SonicWall, the Vista Beta. It wants 'dne64x.sys', which I have been unable to locate on the Windows 7 disk or on the net. That is as far as I have been able to get.

Hey, I have an update on this as of last night. HOLDERs, I can't speak specifically about your problem, but I now have NetExtender working on my Windows 7 laptop to my SSL-VPN.

I'll sort of translate what I learned, in case people don't have access to the SonicWALL forums. Here's the short of it:

- According to SonicWALL, version 3.0.0.9-20sv, which is soon to be released for both the SSL-VPN 200 and 2000, will support Windows 7 clients. They are running it now at https://sslvpn.demo.sonicwall.com.

Here's the best part. I went to the demo site, installed and ran their latest version of NetExtender. After I disconnected, I used it to connect to my own SSL-VPN, and it worked. So, if you want it working now, that might work for you. But it sounds like the firmware will soon be available anyway.

Fix for Sonic Wall Client running in 64-bit Windows 7 Beta

I have gotten SonicWall Global VPN Clinet Version 4.1.1.302 to run in
Windows 7 Beta 64-bit. The error I was initially receiving was something about missing dneg4x.sys. I found this to be a component of Deterministic Networks DNE. Since I did an upgrade from Vista Home Premium 64-bit, SW VPN was partially installed.

Steps:
1) Uninstall Sonic Wall Global Client.
2) Download DNE at ftp://files.citrix.com/dneupdate64.msi for 64-bit. There is also a 32-bt download.
3) Install the DNE.
4) Install Sonic Wall Global Client.

You should be back up and running. The one strange bug is when the client wall sends back the form prompt for user name and password. When I tab to password, the form mysteriously disappears. I found that if I tab and enter password real quickly and click okay, I do get a clean connection. I think this problem is with the version of SW since it was a beta 64 bit version and I have never gone back to see if they have a newer version. :D

You know, I just didn't read your post very carefully before. But I'll point out, mostly for the benefit of people unfamiliar with SonicWALL, that NetExtender and the VPN Client are two different pieces of software. At one time I thought they were very similar, but there's lots of differences, including how/what they install.

This is still good info though, because while my NetExtender wasn't working I tried to use the Global VPN Client software to tunnnel straight to my firewall and still had problems installing in on Windows 7. There are apparently workarounds on the SonicWALL forums for this, but I gave up now that my NetExtender is working.

Thank you so much! I was racking my brain for a few days trying to figure this one out. It worked perfect for me!

Regarding the SonicWall VPN client on 7 64 - there's a small change I needed to make for it to operate properly.

1. Install SonicWall
2. Reboot
3. Open device manager
4. Click View > Show Hidden Devices
5. Expand Non Plug n Play Drivers
6. Open SonicWall IPSec device and set startup type to Automatic
7. Click start while you're there
8. Done

which works great with Win 7 :D, this is the same version which was available with the https://sslvpn.demo.sonicwall.com.

Hi Guys,

I tried the demo site just now and it worked a breeze (on IE8), but then disconnected and tried to run it from my Office Sonicwall page, and I got a message "Failed to Communicate with NetExtender, this could be caused by a damaged or incompatible version of NetExtender has been installed".

It wont run on my Mozilla install because it's incompatible with Mozilla 6.0.

The connection to the Demo site created a profile - but how can you MANUALLY create a VPN profile ??

I was provided NetExtender 4.0.138 directly from SonicWall Support, but on Win7 64-bit, I think the program causes my screen and/or system to be unresponsive, after the system logs out and requires a logon - the mouse appears (moveable), but the screen remains black and I have to do a cold start, which is not my preferred method!

Maybe I should downgrade?? (But the previous version is from 2009!)

After many failed attempts at installing the SSLVPN Sonicwall NetExetender, I found one issue that helps to know. To install the Netextender software, you need to do so from a 32bit version of IE. The 64 bit version at this point in time does not allow you to run the ActiveX needed.
