Depends on server traffic and I bet you were on a less stressed exchange server for work, that is why it was probably faster.

Why does outlook take so long to process when I hit send/receive?

I remember working for a big company and it processing instantly?

I've got a really fast computer (quad core, 8g ram) & cable modem?

in outlook:
>click 'edit'
>hover mouse over 'purge' from the drop down menu
>select 'purge options'
>check the box 'purge items when switching folders while online'

now, whenever you mark a message for deletion in outlook, it will be removed from outlook when: 1) you are online, and 2) you switch from your inbox to another folder
