Icon went missing in Windows 7? Here's a Fix

After installing the latest and greatest Mozilla Firefox 3.5 in Windows 7 (RC Build 7100 32-bit) I noticed that after a while the icon went missing. Firefox was still working correctly, and when I checked the icon properties, and the icon was still present. But for some strange reason it wouldn’t show up in on my Desktop, my Start Menu, or my Taskbar, I would just see a broken icon.

The resolution? Rebuilding the Windows 7 Icon Cache.

Follow these directions:

Your icons should be as good as new!

I am finding this happens quite regularly. So I have written a little script to do it automatically. I will post links to it later once tested properly.

Thanks for sharing this very handy tip Young Hype. If i have this issue i usually delete the iconcache.db in Explorer an then reboot, this takes the reboot out of the equation i assume?

That would be extremely handy Phil. I look forward to the link :D

Thanks a lot man, I just installed Windows 7 Premium, and got all my programs installed using Ninite, then some of my beautiful taskbar icons reverted to generic form. I looked around for a while but only this one helped, thnx! =)

Greetings,

Just thought I'd pop in and mention that I haven't forgotten about the script. In fact it's already done. I just need to get it running consistently so it's easy for anyone to use (including error messages and so on).

Anyway, I know no one is sitting and waiting for it but I just wanted to let you know.

script

Hi there, any news on this script? Have you heard of this problem re-occuring after using your solution? I tried your solution and it did work but now other similar issues plague me.

It didn't work perfectly for me with Adobe Acrobat Professional. The icon wasn't where it belonged. I hunted it down, put it in the Appdata cache and then had to right click the icon on the start menu, select properties, find where you can change the icon and then direct it to the right icon. Now it works.

Hi!

Sinc a week or so almost all my icons went to blank icon.
desktopxd.jpg

I have tried every option mentioned in this topic with no effect:

  • Reapair from boot menu
  • Upgrade from Windows install disk
  • Changing the icon
Some of my icons are still present. One thing I know that icons from shell32.dll (or what is the name of the win default icon gallery) are good, as well as the office icons.

Anyone have a tip?

Greetings,
Lithrinandel
