Build 7057 desktop.ini Fix

Ok guys , I've installed it and first thing, I fixed the desktop.ini issue.

Here's How:

1. Click on the Start orb and at the search type: shell:common startup and press Enter. The "all users" start menu startup folder will open, where you will find a desktop.ini file. Right click on it, select properties and hide it. (Check the "hidden" checkbox and press ok).

2. Done. Reboot and the desktop.ini will not appear again.

Limneos

Note: Special thank to unawave , for verifiying that hiding them also works.

so that you can see the hidden desktop.ini files.
See a hidden file? A contradiction into himself ...

find a desktop.ini file. Delete it.

Microsoft says: Be careful: Deleting of Windows files can lead to instable operating system.

Psychologist says: Why you are killing what you don't like? Learn to live with faults.

Biologist says: Why you are weeding weeds? Even weeds have a right to exist in our world.

Mother says: Why you are so brutal and delete this little, innocent file? Why not give it a chance to emancipate it to other desktop.ini files?

So: Hold "shift" key down and right mouse click to folder "Autostart". Choose "Open command line here". Enter:
attrib desktop.ini +s +h

Windows XP and 7
... and Simon says: Just delete it.

Unawave, have you seen the desktop.ini files in build 7057 or you're just saying that?

The desktop.ini files already have the attribute +s +h (system, hidden), however, the system opens them, since they're in startup folder.

That's why I instruct to go and select "show hidden files and folders".

This means that either there shouldn't be a desktop.ini file in startup folder, or that M$ should have included a registry option to exclude these files in that particular startup folder from opening, but perhaps they forgot to.

Do I sense a bit of sarcasm here?

See a hidden file is a contradiction into itself ??? You mean that, after reading all the above, you didn't understand that I mean to see the "previously" hidden file, but you were trying to see files that are still hidden???

Read an unread message is a contradiction "to itself"?

Open a closed window is a contradiction "to itself"?

The files were hidden, after doing what I describe they're not hidden anymore, so you can see them.

However, if you want to do corrections in english, cause as you know I'm greek and it's not my native language, perhaps you should recheck the syntax "contradiction to himself"? him? whom?

Microsoft has described this error in the year 2003. See here.

And another 1000 posts might be over the internet, but I had the intension not to search around and I just figured it out when I first booted , so I thought I should share it with the forum, not boast that it's my find... Besides, there are 2-3 places from which Windows XP,Windows Vista and Windows 7 opens files at startup. One is the startup folder....It's not rocket science...

Just clearing this out... No intension for debate of any kind.

See attached pictures.

Perhaps in your build 7057.
In my version (fresh installation) only the desktop.ini in
C:\Users\[User name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
has this attributes - but not in
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

It is even much simpler: You only need to check the red marked check box "Hidden" in properties of desktop.ini.

Do I sense a bit of sarcasm here?
No sarcasm - only a little bit of humour.

However, if you want to do corrections in english, cause as you know I'm greek and it's not my native language, perhaps you should recheck the syntax "contradiction to himself"? him? whom?
My native language is German - so I am far away of perfect English.

This little exchange is, don't you think, rather immature.

Under Folder Options -> View , select "Show hidden files, folders and drives" and un-check "Hide protected operating system files" so that you can see the hidden desktop.ini files."
-"See a hidden file? A contradiction into himself ..."

This is not a Forum for English language tuition. The context of the OP's post is perfectly understandable.

"So: Hold "shift" key down and right mouse click to folder "Autostart". Choose "Open command line here". Enter:
attrib desktop.ini +s +h "
"It is even much simpler: You only need to check the red marked check box "Hidden" in properties of desktop.ini."
True. There are many ways to "skin the cat" (as we say in English -lol)

For example, to facilitate testing, one of my firsat customisation options is to open Windows Explorer, and alter the "Tools" - Folder Options" and enable all files and folders. This will also permit you to see those d'''n .ini files!

"Microsoft has described this error in the year 2003"

That is 100% correct. I spend a lot of time on help forums, generally, including Microsoft's own. Over the years, I have built up a private Dbase of hints and patches, now numbering several pages. I have found that some XP patches work with Vista and even 7. Most Vista patches work with 7. You can refer many of the "Tuturials" back to the XP days, for example.
Perhaps, unaware, your complaint is rather that the OP appears to be taking credit for the well known fix? So it may be.
When I offer help, I usually refer to the pre mentioned Dbase, sometimes, having access to early releases, I am able to suggest paths to easier ways to manipulate new OS releases. Rarely do I, however, come up with a spanking new idea of my own! I see no advantage to pointing this out to readers requesting help.
If other members were straightforward, whilst there are many very clever guys on the forums, the majority are drawing from pre-quoted experiences, already on the web. With the sole intention of helping enquirers, I see no harm in that.

Indeed, and it was all a misunderstanding , the guy meant no harm.. :(

I did not want to criticize you. I only want to show that Microsoft has made this little error still in 2003. And in 2009 again.

My apologies then, I thought you meant I was boasting about finding it. In the above post from M$, they also instuct to delete them , since a desktop.ini file is used for setting options for folder customization, which is unnecessary for startup folder.

Humor is well taken here, :p so keep it up.

Indeed, they were not hidden, my bad. Hiding them works too. Updated my original post.Thank you!

I agree: It don't make much sense.

But if you have installed many programs and all of them have this yellow folder icon then you can change this icon to get more overview. See picture.

Hello
I am having a different problem with desktop.ini file. As i put any DVD in the drive and open its contents a new desktop.ini file is shown waiting to be written to DVD. Previously I lost some of data on one of my DVD as i burned some more files and when i finished writing and re-inserted the DVD nothing was there in it. I am using Win 7 Build 7048. See the attached file plz
