A SSD uses flash memory, like a thumb drive and SD card.

A hard disk uses magnetic platers, like a floppy disk.

Read this article on SSDs and this article on hard disks for more info.

SSDs are way faster than HDDs, more reliable, use less energy, and run cooler. They also cost way more.
