Solved Can't Make Windows Mail Default

Hmm, can you please tell me which files and/or protocols you want to open with Windows Mail to access the newsgroups?
I will try to extend my registry file.

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 (x64)
I'm already using it for newgroups with no problem. The reason it wont become the default news handler is that there is no other news handler installed. Ergo, it IS the default, by default, if you get what I mean.

It was the question of why I could take the default setting away form Incredimail Premium that was puzzling me. But I put it down to the fact that Windows 7 does not support Windows Mail in any case, so it's just probably ignoring the fact that it's active.

Try this registry file. It is an addition to the first one. You will be able to configure Windows Mail under "Default Programs" and Windows Mail itself will show that it is the defaul handler for mails and news.

OK it didn't make Windows Mail appear in Default Programs but it does appear under "Set Program Access & Defaults" and if I then force it to be default there my other email programs asks me to make it default again, yet Windows Mail options never shows that it is the default at any time during this procedure.

Very weird. Thanks for all help!!

At least one step close. I forgot to include one small registry key :p

I'm glad it worked! One thing is still missing though. In Windwos Vista "Default Programs" shows two entries for Windows Mail, one for 'Client' and one for 'News'.
Guess I'll have to search some registry again.

I noticed that but in Win 7 my Windows Mail is showing as the default news program in WM Options if not in the Default Programs section so something is working.

Microsoft should make WM an optional download, the same as WLM.

YES - You need to run both scripts.

THANKS THANKS THANKS

I was going NUTS trying to solve this, and this was the ONLY PLACE on the internet with information to fix this issue. Of course, I had to join the forum once I discovered how helpful you all are.

THANKS AGAIN!!!

Help an old lady get this thing working, please

Steps I have taken:

I renamed both sets of Windows Mail, 32 and 64 bit to Windows Mail 7 and then copied my saved 32 bit folder and the downloaded 64 bit ones to C: and D: Program Files and Program Files (86). (Having a set on D may be causing a problem.)

I downloaded both .reg files from here and the first gave me an error. Tried second and it was successful. Tried first again and got an error, don't quite remember, something about may not have been successful. However I tried to link to the test mailto: and that worked. ????? Maybe it worked for mailto: but not the other registry keys?

It is my (only) default mail program, checked that.

Copied link from D: Program Files to startup and when I clicked on it, it said "Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be found." It was right there in the folder. I recopied the downloaded 64 bit files again (thank you sir, for the files.)

Also, at some point it said MSOE.DLL could not be initialized."

Rightclicked on WinMail.exe from D Program Files. drug it to Desktop and selected make shortcut here or something like that, then clicked on it and got "Windows Mail could not be started. The
application was unable to open the Windows Mail message Store. Windows Mail was unable to locate its message database. If you've moved the database files to a new location, click OK to reset the database path to that location. Otherwise, click Cancel to proceed, any existing messages found will be available under Orphoned Accounts. (oxoooo0000). I clicked OK.

Then it said "Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the Windows Mail message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. (0x890070057,183)

The next message was "Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be found."

I then renamed the shortcut Windows Mail.exe and got the same thing.

Fiddled with ownership like crazy in C Program Files, sent it to the Desktop as a shortcut.

Don't ask me how, but at some point I got it open (I think I clicked on it within the file folder), and it had my account settings all in their but not my files. I wrote an email as a test and tried to send it but got an error message back: some errors have occurred and "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

So please, for the love of God, tell me what I have done wrong, and how to fix it. I am, much as I hate to admit it, an old lady, have a brain lesion that slows me down a lot, have wasted too much time on this cursed thing.

Pop mail account

Welcome to windows 7 forums,
Miss Roser, I don't understand the top of your post but I do understand that your email client program is not configured, you will need 3 things to configure your mail client which is as follows:
  1. You will need your account password/email password
  2. You will need your email name
  3. You will need your pop 3 configuration and your smtp server name
Translation: Password, you will need your password in order to pop into your mail account. Your email name is what you want to be seen as, pop 3 is configured this way: "pop-server.yahoo.com" this allows your email to pop your account and collect your inbound mail, in order for you to send mail you must configure your smtp server this way: "smtp-server.yahoo.com" I'm just guessing about the yahoo part. Be careful when you input your email/account password as it is case sensetive.

Adrian

It had my Vista data in it, which worked, however, I deleted the old account in the one on C:\ and made a new one and it worked!

D, however, I deleted, then copied from C, then made a shortcut. It doesn't work, the same errors as above. I'd like it to work on D in case something happens to C, it will then be safe from all this problem in the future.
