I'm having this exact same problem. I have an ATI 4850 on an ECS motherboard. Sometimes I have both audio and video just fine over hdmi, and then other times I have only video and the audio panel shows the same "not plugged in" message. Once that happens the only way I have found so far to fix it is to uninstall and reinstall the ati
driver. It is quite annoying.
