Repair Windows XP - How to Perform a Repair Installation of Windows XP - Part 1 of 2

Got this now. That was my mistake. Choose "R" to soon.

When the choose what drive/XP to repair it only lists the version in the system image on Disk1.

So I'm going to unplug Disk1 so Disk0 is the only option to find the XP.

Will update here. It might be awhile.
If it works I'll have to do the updates according to the above tutorial.
This is a pre-SP1 XP disc.

Would you like to separate Win7 out onto another HD to boot via BIOS so that neither OS can impact the other via shared boot files?

When XP starts back up, it should have an overwritten System MBR which no longer has Win7 included as a Dual Boot. If you wanted to add Win7 back, you would install EasyBCD 2.0 in XP (after Net Framework 2.0) to Add Win7 to MBR. http://neosmart.net/blog/2010/welcome-to-easybcd-2/

Consider instead using free Partition Wizard bootable CD to Move Win7 partition to unallocated space of the same size which you create on another HD. It would be best to make that space in the preferred left-hand lower HD address but this can also be done first using PW CD to "Resize".

Once you rightclick>Move Win7 partition to new HD, then rigthclick>Modify>Set to Active, OK. Apply all steps. Then unplug the XP HD temporarily, set Win7 HD as first HD to boot in BIOS setup, boot Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times to write the System MBR to the newly moved Win7.

When you plug XP HD back in, boot it using the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key F8 or ESC on Asus boards. You can keep the old inactive Win7 partition on XP drive until you are sure you like the arrangement.

Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD
Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times
    System Repair Disc - Create

I read your above post six hours after you posted.

    Doctor appt. today.

Anyway got XP CD repair working properly according to the tutorial you posted.
It booted to the XP but after the repair not much would function properly. IE would not work. All the WinXP update service was still there but the pre SP1 XP would not open any of the new programs.
The XP disk I have is pre SP1 so it supports no modern drivers except the LAN driver and it was showing working but other weird stuff was happening I guess.
So it was a mess so I did a new install after cleaning/reformating the partion for a new install thru Win7 after using the Win7 repair CD to fix the boot loader.
I have all the Windows updates installed etc.
So it appears to be working properly so far.

Easy BCD was no problem already had it on a flash drive. That could be on Brinks tutorial for dual boot.

First thing I did after initial XP install was to go to XP system restore and disable monitoring of the other drives. So far so good.

I'll check out the links you posted for Partition Wizard etc.
Need the software in front of me and your instructions to figure it all out.

Might be a day or two but I'll get back to you on it.
My wife is off work tomorrow so I might not have much play time.

    Thanks, appreciate all the help.

Damn I almost linked to XP SP2 as a reminder you can install it from download.

But a clean reinstall is always better anyway, as there is no corruption reimported.

I only wish you would have installed XP to the other HD.

Post back a screenshot of your full Disk Management drive map and listings when you decide what you want to do. Use Snipping Tool in Start Menu.

I read the tutorial on slipstreaming the SATA drivers in to install the XP on an HD.

I'm totally lost on that at the moment.

    Thanks a million.
Now when I win the lottery you have your IOU!

Mike I was looking back over this thread and I think what is still missing is trying install of XP on a separate HD, then booting it via the BIOS one-time Boot Menu key which every computer has.

Win7 would continue to boot via BIOS boot order set as first HD to boot.

What this does is cut EasyBCD and a Windows-managed Dual boot out of the picture so there is no possibility for the Restore Points to be interfered with by the shared boot files.

This is assuming you still have Win7 System Restore configured to only protect WIn7, and then XP SysRestore only checked to protect XP. If it is set correctly like this and you still can't restore XP then separating the HD's is the only solution I can think of.

Is it possible you referring to the Win7 backup Image and not System Restore? Are you wanting to create a Win7 backup image and it insists on including XP because XP holds the System MBR? I just need to clarify that isn't the case.

    XP only restore points.

I have Macrium XP image back up for XP with a Bootable CD.
So the XP is covered to restore.
Plus I have System Images. Win7 and Macrium.:)
I don't use XP much occasionally for old games that won't work on Win7.
I agree seperating them should resolve issue.
However XP is working properly otherwise, I have a backup with Macrium so I think I'll leave it as is for the time being. If I break XP beyond repair then I'll install to seperate drive.
If it were a OS I needed for work or other major use then seperate drives would have already been done as you suggested two weeks ago.
That isn't the case for a few games.

    Thanks Greg.

    Greg

I had to zip it to upload the file. Copy not original.
According to System Restore there are 33 restore points in this 151Kb folder.

I'm not sure what that file is, has two .exe's in it?

Here are the steps when you're ready. I am providing them again since you posted elsewhere that I wasn't able to help you fix your problem

I would make a Partition on the left side of your secondary HD (with no OS's) larger than XP partition using Partition Wizard bootable CD.

Then with Primary HD unplugged and secondary set to boot first, image XP there using Macrium Reflect. Verify that XP boots up, or we may need to plug back in primary to run bootsect command to rebuild MBR which is fine since it sheds Win7 edit then anyway.

Once XP boots on its own HD power down to unplug it, plug back in Win7 HD, set it first to boot in BIOS setup after DVD drive, boot Partiton Wizard bootable CD to delete the XP partition.

Boot Win7 DVD Repair console, click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times to write the System MBR to Win7 partition until Win7 boots on its own.

Now power down to plug XP back in, boot it using one-time BIOS boot menu key.

If XP System Restore is still interfered with then we will need to rebuild the XP MBR using bootsect from Win7 HD Command Line.
