    Thank you both.

I have cleaned the disk but when I try clean all it just hangs. I know it is a big disk but I left it overnight and no change.

I havn't tried to swap the disks round but I'll try that now.

I looked at services and shadow copy was set to manual already so i tried auto and no success.

Have you run Disk Check and HD diag/repair CD scan from maker of HD? Clean All should work unless HD is bad or failing.

You can boot Partiition Wizard bootable CD to Wipe from Disk tab.

Have a look at Option Three in this tutorial at the link below for an out-line on how to run a wipe using the Partition Wizard bootable CD.

I ran partition wizard boot and it cleaned successfully after a few hours. I then formatted the disk in PW. Tried the backup and got the same error.

I will try swapping the disks later today as that's the only thing I haven't tried - because the cables are innacessible without removing other stuff.

    No success.

Looked at event log and found this:
The backup operation that started at '‎2010‎-‎10‎-‎03T20:56:31.433000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348106'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
    and

The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout.

Thanks for your efforts. I gave up and contacted Microsoft and spent several hours on 1st and 2nd level helpdesks and the problem is now resolved.

It turned out to be some corruption on the D: drive rather than the M: drive so we moved everything from D: to a new volume on the same drive and the backup worked. I have now deleted the D: volume. I think it must have been something that happened during the clean install of 64bit because I used the same backup procedure in 32bit and it worked fine.

    Dear all,

I'm having the very same problem. This is a totally new system, so hardware problems are not very likely to cause the problem. I have 3 harddrives installed, and want to backup onto the third 2 TB drive. Any help would be very welcomed.

    TIA

What was on the D drive?

How was it determined D was corrupt? Was it file system corruption?

FWIW and for future folks with the same problem who might stumble over this thread - on my system it's caused by Kaspersky AV. Turning it off during backup solved the problem.
