    Windows Backup and Restore

I am confused as to how Windows Backup and Restore works. I am not trying to use it, but would like to know. == If I backed up my HD and later wanted to do a Clean Install, it would seem that the format would erase my backups. Would I have to make a separate partition for the backups or how does that work?

    Hello.

Yes you have to save the backup to another partition and some programs require you to save to another, separate Hard Disk Drive (HDD) all-together.

What type of programs would require me to save to another HD and how would I know that?

The Paragon program, the one I use does and it will tell you that it can't save to the location before it creates the backup.

Here is a very good free one to have "a play" with.

One more question. == Is Macrium better than the Windows Backup & Restore or is it just a matter of preference?

Quite a few here say so, but you know what's said about opinions.

Let me ask another. == How does System Image differ from Backup and Restore? When I create a Restore Point, is this the same as making a System Image?

Simply, system restore just backs-up the registry and system files, where an image creates a backup of the entire partition.

Then if you are using Windows Backup and Restore, this is the same thing as making a System Image, just a different way of saying it? == Also with Backup and Restore, I assume it compresses the files so that it does not take up an equal about of space on your HD?

    Correct.

I will say this, some have issues with the Windows image restore program and lose their image in the process, so it's a good idea to not put all your eggs in one basket.
