    Old HDD Problems + Recovery

I have about a 5 year old drive that stopped working around the beginning of this year. It makes some pretty funky sounds, sounds like it's trying to read the data of the hard disk, kind of like it's grinding along. But it sounds nothing like typical hard drive failing noises I've looked up on the Internet. As far as I can remember, the disk had always made a similar sound back when it worked from just reading the data off the disk, but it had sounded like it was struggling a lot more to, and sounded a good bit more severe.

I slaved the drive to a friend's computer last week, and I could still navigate through some folders but could not see any files (it said the folders were empty, save a few system files).

I was just wondering if I could manually recover data from this HDD or if I should instead send it in for professional data recovery and what services (or programs if the former) you would recommend.

    Give some HDD information.
    Run Windows 7 disk checks
Download and run the disk manufacturer diagnostics

Programs like (free) Recuva may help retrieving data.
