Unable to restore system to more than 3 days ago

I have tried to perform a system restore to a time before 11 Nov, but even though the on screen message says "You have successfully restored your system to 5 Nov etc" it has only restored back to the 11th as microsoft security essentials says it was updated 3 days ago and in the system restore history there is no record of any system restore before the 11th. The reason for performing a system restore, was that on startup I noticed that CPU usage in task manager was occasionly showing 0% which I thought rather odd as it dosn't normally go below 1% and thought that a system restore would rectify this. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this , they would be most appreciated.

    Go to system restore
When it asks for what day to restore to, on the bottom left, check the box show more dates.

Thanks richc46, I know how to select another restore date and when I do, it dosn't restore to the chosen date even though after performing a system restore the popup message says that the system had been restored to the chosen date successfully, but had only restored to 3 days earlier instead of 7 and system restore shows no history of being restored to 7 days earlier but only to 3?

    Lets make sure I understand
You want to restore to November 1.
When done it says restored to November 1, but you say its only restored to Novber 10.
    Is that correct?

I want to restore back to November 5th, which I selected when doing system restore, but it will only restore back to November 11th, something is preventing it restoring it back to any date before November 11th, as I have tried restoring back to November 8th also, whats puzzling me is after the restore operation and restart the popup says that the restore back to the selected date was successful and in the system restore history there is no record of the system being restored, as it would show "undo restore" on the dates a system restore had been performed.

Try in safe mode and tell me if it works.
If it does work try with a clean boot.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Is there really a restore point prior to 11/11. I would check with Command Prompt. The command is vssadmin list shadows. That will show you all available restore points and they are dated.

I tried vssadmin list shadows and all that happened was something flashed up on the screen and disappeared. I have restore points back to 3 Nov according to the system restore "select another date" screen.
