Norton Ghost restore in Win 7

I've got one

I did something moderately stupid that killed 7201. In order to revive the box I tried to restore a N Ghost image. Booted from NG recovery F12 to boot order. Boot from CD (Cd is bootible) and windows wants to do a recovery. Ok let windows do it maybe it can recover. Win does its thing and nada. So I re-do and try to restore from the ghost back up and cant. My only options are start win normally or do a recovery. Cant get into ghost cd.

Yeah dont do stupid things, and yeah I hate Ghost too but. Any ideas?

TIA

Ken

Hmmmm... is has been a while.... I gave up the Ghost long ago....
I switched to Acronis True Image for reasons like this.

The first thing I might try it to boot into the BIOS Setup and change the boot order there to boot first from the CD/DVD drive (Norton Ghost CD is bootable right?). This will hopefully bypass the F12 boot menu and go straight to the Ghost.

If that succeeds you should first examine your partitions and Ghost Images. Verify the Ghost image you want to restore from.

Then decide... should you first image what you still have to another Ghost image file BEFORE attempting the restore? Your call....

Try that first.. if you have not already moved on... after all you posted 7 hours ago....

hey. Acronis is great at what they do but if you search SF you will see that both aconis, and ghost have failed to restore on different win 7 installs. Check the thread for options

I did see at least one of the posts re Acronis. And I did reply to it.

Acronis True Image Home V11 has been working fine for me. I have not tried a clone operation. But other than that I have not had any problems....

Of course I can't get my Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 to work while everyone else seems to....

I use Norton Ghost ver 14 this way:
Have a "prime" install with my everyday use version of Windows 7. On another HD I have a barebone install of Windows 7 along with Norton ghost ver 14. When I want to make a backup or a restore of my everyday Windows 7, I choose from the mobo's bootselection to boot the barebone install. Starts Ghost when booting is finished, and now my "everyday Windows 7" is drive D: I then can make a complete backup or restore of drive D: to/from another partition (on same HD as the barebone system).
That has worked without any troubble since Windows 2k (earlier versions of Ghost in earlier days )

Well I resolved my restore problem. It wasn't Ghost it was a failing dvd player. The way you use ghost is an interesting idea. I do something similar. On a clean install I add all the requisite apps and others. I then Do a full BU. I can then install and remove anything I want. If the OS starts acting up I restore the clean vanilla. It keeps the size down etc. I am trying another BU utility as well. Its called Macrium Reflect. It includes BartPE, and Linux boots uses much less resources than ghost and is free. I am thinking about using both. Its an on going project.

I wanted to say thanks for replying and a great idea as well

If you want me to I will keep you aprised on the progress

Thanks Again
