Windows 7 - System Restore Option Missing from Start Menu/Accessories/System Tools

On the subject of System Recovery

For some reason, the option for System Restore disappeared from the Tools file of my Accessories Folder in the Start Menu.
In order to recover, I Googled but after hours of searching could find NO answer which helped to recover the option even though a lot of people seemed to
be having the same problem.
After some fiddling around, I managed to resolve:-
1). Locate original System Recovery Icon = C:\Windows\system32\rstrui.exe
2). Right click and choose 'send-to' and Desktop from the options. Make sure it is a Shortcut you are sending and not the
actual exe file.
3). Rename the shortcut to 'System Recovery' (may need Admin priviledges).
4). In Windows Explorer, Click: Tools/FoldersOptions/View/Show Hidden Folder, Files and Drives
5). Locate & Move shortcut to :-
c:\Users\YourName\ApplicationData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\Accessories
6). This is it - Just remember to close Tools/FoldersOptions/View/DON'TShow Hidden Folder, Files and Drives (Opposite of
Step 4).
I have a strong feeling that a downloaded application may have affected this Start item and as such I am running an additional Full
Virus and Malware Scan.
Whatever the case, I now have the option back in my Start/Accessories/Tool/System Folder although of course it was always
available in the Menu Tool Bar of 'Computer' under System Properties., but access is easier from Start Menu I think.

If there is a more correct way of doing this I would be happy to hear but the nearest resolution I could find was a small downloadable app which only worked with XP to reinstall missing accessories.

And having said this - I have since found that although this works for a while - after a couple of days' reboots, 'something' triggers the deletion of the rstrui.exe (system restore shortcut) from my System Tools folder in Accessories (Start Menu).

So, I am back to square 1...... Happy new year folks...

I too was missing the restore program icon from the System Tools Folder. Finding the .exe location was relatively easy as was creating a shortsut on my desktop. The path of where to (re)put the icon was invaluable, i.e:

c:\Users\YourName\ApplicationData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools

I have rebooted the system and the shortcut is still there. If it dissappears, "after a while", as you stated, I will post that fact.

and glad this helped.... Just as an FYI, after my last post, the app did continue to disappear from the Accessories folder but I found a program which is Freeware called System Protect - here's the link -

I downloaded and added the folder for system restore from 'roaming' and it has not disappeared since - the same with a couple of other files I put in there.

This program apparently protects your files from any unauthorized changes and alerts you if something/someone tries to make a change - you can also customize it to protect specific files.

Like I say, the restore app has not disappeared since and as the 'system-protect' app is absolutely free - there's 'no harm, no foul'... it's all good -take care, Sean
