Problem when using ERUNT to restore Windows 7 registry:

yes - it has a registry backup component that, even without an UI, is the best i've seen so far. it'll do a daily backup & another one when you force-unistall something.

though i won't vouch for it 100% yet - some of its backups where incomplete, missing the software-hive. but that may have been because i was using an old version.

I was hoping for an easy way to restore the backup. Thanks for your input, zdoe.

I just got eruNT working with A Guy's great directions, then I came across this thread for more information. Here I find out (after all that work) that, yes, the Registry backup goes fine, but when you do the restore, you get the Blue Screen of Death, and worse!!!

This thread may be old, but for anyone coming here for information -- it's not true, at least with Windows 7 Pro SP1 (32-bit) and the same version of this utility.

After reading this thread, I thought I'd better see for myself what happens, before waiting for an emergency, when I had to do a Registry restoration with this utility. I prepared with a system volume Acronis image, a Windows 7 image, plus a fresh Windows 7 Repair Disc, to make sure I could recover -- if and when the OS 'bombed' with the restored Registry.

Both backup and restoration were Run as Administrator, and I don't think this was mentioned by the original poster.

I ran eruNT, then erdNT, said 'Yes' to the reboot prompt -- -- waited -- -- and lo and behold, the boot went perfectly, the Windows 7 Desktop appeared, with everything 100% normal. So, eruNT works fine, at least on A 32-bit OS, with SP1. Not to worry. Don't know why the original poster had this problem or if anyone else was able to duplicate it.

The thread doesn't mention if the OS had SP1 and this could make a difference. Also, the thread states that the Registry recovery attempts were made by running eruNT. If literally true, this could be a problem, since the executable that has to run, to effect the recovery -- is erdNT.exe, not eruNT.exe.

This will likely be the last post on the thread, but maybe it will give it some balance.

This is a long post but stick with it and you will be able to see where I'm heading.

I have been reading this topic and decided to drop my 2 cents in and see if any one want's to post and kick this along a bit.

ERUNT or ERDNT
First off I want to say thankyou to Lars for making this utility, which has served the computer industry very well.

At the same time it seems that there has been a lack of updating it so it can be setup to work with out someone delving deep into the system area to make it work without flaws with Windows 7 64 bit systems. The majority of people would find it daunting and frightening, so they go elseware to use something that fills their needs, so Lars, if you are reading this, you need to update ERUNT so the user can install it and not go and fiddle around so your software works with out intervention.

I have also found and setup the ERUNT GUI interface which is a great bit of gear to have and works very well with Lar's ERUNT, once again, as long as Windows is working all's well, but if Windows won't start, then your are dead in the water.

OK that being said, I have also noticed along with other users that once the OS has failed to start you need to know if or where ERUNT has put, saved any registry settings/files so you can copy those files back into the registry and so get your computer back up and running again.
So one needs to access a dead windows system HD to access it and copy the correct "Date" ERDNT files over the broken files which are preventing the OS from starting up.

I have made a DOS BAT (still in BETA) file that can delve into the "usual" places that ERUNT puts the saved registry, it works quite well (IF the computer is working), and shows the screens in colors but is not mouseable as it is in DOS or ASKII display.
Once again it only works if there is an operating OS on the HD, so if there is someone out there who knows where there is a mouseable file that can work in MS DOS or "other" DOS and can be setup from a bootable CD please let me know.


I am prepared to send my batch file to whoever wants to help me with this but I ran into a problem where bat files or exe files are seen as a virus if you try and email them, anyone got any answers for a fix for this?

Maybe I should have started a new thread, but I want to see if there are any takers before I go ahead with it..........:)

i'll start worrying about win8 around the sp3 of win7...
