Blue Screen when running Windows Backup

I've tried running the built in windows backup twice now, it runs for quite a while, I'd guess an hour or more, then gets a blue screen.

I've collected the information as suggested:

    Is Windows 7 . . .
    - x86 (32-bit) or x64 ?
    x64
    - the original installed OS on the system?
    Factory Install
    - an OEM or full retail version?
    OEM
    - What is the age of system (hardware)?
Dell Studio XPS, just under 1 year old.
    - What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?)
No, I have not reinstalled, it is the factory install

Here is the zip file with the BSOD dump and the report:
    Attachment 130089

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi, Jamie. I looked at both of your dumps. Both are bugcheck A and both blame athrx.sys, Atheros network adapter driver. This driver is up to date. But on the off chance that it is corrupted, download a new driver from this link, Atheros Communications, uninstall your current driver and install the new driver.

Out of date drivers can cause conflicts and BSOD's. You have two outdated drivers loaded on your system. One is quite obsolete. Update these drivers from the links provided.
pssdk42.sys Tue Jun 23 08:11:57 2009 - Packet Sniffer SDK. microOLAP Technologies LTD. Uninstall this software. See below.

sxuptp.sys Fri Sep 12 00:34:19 2008 - ? related to a Belkin F5L009 Network USB hub. Silex Support & Downloads. This driver is obsolete. Update the driver or upgrade the hardware to something that is certified compatible with Win 7. Your dump shows that your USB subsystem was heavily involved in the crash.
Many third party security programs create conflicts with Win 7. Packet Sniffer SDK is a third party security program with an outdated driver. It may well be conflicting with your network adapter causing it to crash. Download Revo Uninstaller (free) and use it to completely uninstall Packet Sniffer.

I would uninstall Packet Sniffer and update or uninstall the USB hub before I reinstall athrx.sys. Follow these suggestions, reboot and see how your system runs. Please update us and let us know. If you get another BSOD, upload it and we will take the next steps.

Jamie, based on this thread, Hard Drive Issue - "Reallocated Sectors Count", I recommend that you run Check Disk. Please post your Check Disk results.
Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt. Please do this for each hard drive on your system.

When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

    Elevated Command Prompt:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

    CHKDSK LogFile:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.
Double click on the Source column header.
Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry (wininit for Windows 7).

I still recommend that you take care of the two drivers I mentioned above as drivers can certainly cause a bugcheck code A. Follow James Colbert's advice in your other thread and then do a thorough test of your hard drives with a bootable hard drive diagnostic program: HD Diagnostic. Report back with the results.

pssdk42.sys Tue Jun 23 08:11:57 2009 - Packet Sniffer SDK. microOLAP Technologies LTD. Uninstall this software. See below.

I would uninstall Packet Sniffer and update or uninstall the USB hub before I reinstall athrx.sys. Follow these suggestions, reboot and see how your system runs. Please update us and let us know. If you get another BSOD, upload it and we will take the next steps.

    Hello;

Thanks for all the help. I started with trying to remove Packet Sniffer. The problem is that is not something I remembered installing. I installed Revo Uninstall as you directed, and Packet Sniffer nor Microlap were listed in the installed programs.

I looked at the time / date stamp in the pssdk42.sys files and it very closely (withing a minute) corresponded to the install time of Networkx, a tool that I found a link to in the free software post here on the forum.

So I uninstalled and cleaned with Revo, however, the pssdk42.sys file is still in place, so I am not sure if it really it was from Networkx or not. Seems like it could have been part of that program.

Do you think i should just delete the pssdk42 file at this point and assume it was a part of the Networkx program?

    Thank You,

    Jamie

This driver is obsolete. Update the driver or upgrade the hardware to something that is certified compatible with Win 7. Your dump shows that your USB subsystem was heavily involved in the crash.

I don't know what this is. I do not have a USB Hub on this computer, only the built in USB ports (which there are a lot of them).

I checked in the Device manager, but do not have anything Belkin listed under USB devices nor are any of the listed devices showing errors.

How can I go about locating and removing this? Do I simply delete the sxuptp.eye file?

    Thanks

I will do this also. I decided to manually copy my important files off of this computer onto an external hard drive. I was doing this over the network last night, it seemed quite slow, then I was using the computer while copying and everything hung and I had to reboot.

So I moved the hard drive so it was directly connected to the PC. I am copying "My Documents" to the external hard drive. It is 248GB. It says it is copying at around 10 to 11 MB /sec. Seems a bit slow, but that's probably the external drive. I should have all my files manually backed up by some time tomorrow, I has a couple hours left on My Documents.

edit: Sun 10:00 a.m.: Still copying; my files for a manual backup. Looks like they will be all copied by early this afternoon. Then I can proceed with removing those files.

    Thanks

Rather than delete it, I suggest your rename it. That way you can always go back and rename it again easily if your find you need this driver. Create a restore point, using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, locate the driver file, and rename it from .sys to .old. Reboot and the driver will not load. This will break whatever software or hardware the driver is associated with.

Rename sxuptp.sys as I described above. This way if you find that something does not work that you need, you can rename it again. Usually, a Belkin hub is a third party add on. I have one on my computer.

Very good. Having a copy or a backup of your files is always a good idea.

I think I am on the right path. The system started the backup at 7:00 last night. I think it was fairly far along, no errors, however, I accidentally canceled it when I hit the keys to wake up my monitor.

So I have been running the backup again, starting earlier today, and so far no errors. So I am hoping the problem that caused the BSOD is now solved.

I'll still run the check disk program as soon as the backups complete. It appears to be about 1/3 of the way done right now, so hopefully tomorrow I'll finally have it all backed up and be able to move on to other maintaince.

    Thank You again,

    Jamie

Thank You, The backup completed successfully. The backup started automatically while I was still waiting for my files to copy that I was manually backing up. So I let it run. I only had about 600GB on my internal drive, and somehow between the windows backup and my manual backup, my 2TB drive is 200GB away from being full .

I've started CHKDSK and will reboot shortly so it can run.

    Thank You,
