wins 7 recovery of files & programs

Hi ,
hope someone could help.
I foolishly did an upgrade of my Java , didnt complete fully by rebooting PC at time , then continued to try an upgrade of my pctools spyware doctor antivirus which seemed to almost complete then it did a memory dump & loaded me back up into the system recovery. I cannot now get back into windows 7 .
Tried startup repair but windows said unable to automatically repair.
Tried system restore but don't seem to have any restore points to restore to ?? presume my fault here so then tried the following as I cannot get into windows

Still no joy as when I did a restart just loaded back into system recovery options.
Is there any way at all I can restore without having to do a restore back to factory settings ?

No , I havent tried that yet I did try the windows memory diagonostic tool but no issues found , also when I did the Startup repair it said could not find a problem but did say in the diagonistics "the OS version is incompatible with startup repair" just in case this helps.
I'II try the chkdsk /r & see what I get from that , thanks

tried chkdsk /r but said " the type of file system is NTFS, cannot lock current drive , windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected "
any ideas please ?
just realised in x: so did a cd to C: & tried from their but again said locked drive but said the volume is in use by another process. It then says that I can run if volume is dismounted but this would mean all other handls would become invalid , then gave me option to dismount on this volume I said No at this point it also asked if I would like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts , again just said No at this point.

tried chdsk /r , completed all the stages , said windows has made corections to the file system , then showed a load of information on disk space etc , I then exited & did restart but this just took me back to the Startup repair menu where windows stated cannot repair automatically .

Appreciate thoughts & any more advice , really would like to save files etc before having to do a factory rest etc

Copy out your files now using Win7 DVD or Repair CD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Try booting into Safe Mode.

Make sure Win7 partition or its 100mb System Reserved boot partition (preferred) are marked Active: Partition - Mark as Active
System Repair Disc - Create

Then run any offered repair from the DVD Repair console or Repair CD. If it doesn't offer or repair fails, boot back into Recovery Options list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots: Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times

If no OS is found to repair, open a Command line from Recovery Options, type:
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Now try the Repairs.

System Restore should be automated by Win7. iF not, try running it from the Recovery Tools list on DVD/CD.

Try running System File Checker from the DVD/Repair CD Command Prompt: SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

If no joy, run the Factory Recovery partition from boot (preferred) or from disks made at setup. Or you can go completely clean by wiping the HD to re-install windows 7

thanks for info , seems bit daunting but will check the DVD that came with PC , load it & try & see if I can get the Windows recovery console & copy & paste as you mention , will let you know when back home monday how I get on , thanks for great advice

have copied off the files using the wins 7 CD , now moving on to setting the partition as active . How do I know which partition I should mark as active ? Disk 0 shows 465GB & when doing a list partition I have partition 1 Recovery 9GB size 1024KB offset & partition 2 Primary size 465GB offset 9GB , I hope i'm correct in that partition 2 as it is the primary that this should be marked active .....well here goes
