    Startup days after System Restore

Please forgive me if I am posting in the wrong location. I am familiar with forums, but an inexperienced user.

On Feb 18 I turned on my laptop and received the black boot up screen with the options for safemode, networking, or normal. When I attempted to boot it brought me directly to the screen stating I needed to preform a system recovery or diagnostic. I have been in IT for a while and have never had issues working with system restore before. Laptops, however, are new to me. As is Windows 7.

I preformed the system diagnostic and it led me to do a system restore. I did this to the point I knew my computer was fine, before installing itunes. (I hate apple and everything about them). My computer rebooted and everything was fine. It popped up with the regular window: Your computer has successfully been restored to Feb 17. I ran some maintenance and preformed my virus scans. Nothing appeared to be wrong. It ran fine all day and that evening. I shut down my laptop before bed and everything went smoothly.

The next morning: Feb 19. I booted my computer up. It started just fine and went to windows. When the desktop screen appeared there was a command window and a popup in the background. It took about 120 seconds for the command window to disappear and the desktop to come up. The pop up stated Your computer has successfully been restored to Feb 17.

    TODAY: FEB 20 -
Booted my computer. Same issue. Gets almost to desktop. Opens command window. Shows popup Your computer has successfully been restored to Feb 17.

    Please help.
This is irritating. I am afraid it will cause problems for future installations and updates.

I will try to answer any questions regarding my problem. Thank you :)

Do you know if it is in fact being re-restored to Feb 17 on every boot---or is the message not true?

What entries do you show in the startup tab of msconfig?

Do you have any tasks scheduled?

I really have no idea what is going on and have never heard of this. The above are just some things that come to mind.

Have you considered a restore to Feb 16 or earlier, just to see if maybe you then get a message about "your computer has been restored to Feb 16"?

Use a System Repair CD: System Repair Disc - Create

Run Startup Repair first to see if it finds any issues to repair, then SysRestore as suggested to a few days before the previous restore.

Afterwards monitor your logs and do basic troubleshooting steps to see if anything is found: Computer lags every couple seconds

In particular if the behavior repeats and there is no error pattern in log to pursue run System File Checker and then a Repair Install which are described in the troubleshooting tips given above.

You can also start making plans if necessary to get a purrfect clean reinstall following these tips: re-install windows 7

I say likely spyware. try something like malware bytes. I agree check msconfig for irregular startup items. ANything that has a dumprep -k entry or a random string of characters.

How to use MSCONFIG in Windows 7: NetSquirrel.com

How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to scan and remove malware from your computer
