zigzag, I'm wondering with acronis, do you have to have a CD Writer on the same machine? or can it create an ISO file? also since the amout of data is in the tens of Gigabytes, do I have to put all the image on CD or You can put some of the image files on an external harddisk?

I just found out you can create a bootable CD and load up your backed up paritions from any external storage, also I just disovered that the laptop does have a DVD-RAM player, so that solves my questions :)

You might also want to check out Paragon Software's Drive Backup. I've used several flavors in both 32 & 64 bit and have had excellent results, restoring from a bootable DVD they provide an image for to which you can easily add drivers for any cointroller you may have. It's very fast, does differential backups, and can export specific files / folders from the image backup. Highly recommended.
