    Failed to restore from VHD image

    I attempted to move W7 x64 from one physical drive to another by restoring VHD image but failed. The details as follows:
    I added a new physical drive, created three primary partitions and one extended partitions in which three logical partition were further created.
    I created and saved a VHD file for the W7 x64 on one of the three logical partitions.
    I set the top primary partition active.
    Shut off the machine and removed the old physical hdd where W7 is installed.
    Tuned on the machine, inserted the W7 x64 DVD, booted from it and selected “Repair”
    The VHD image on the logical drive was detected.
    When it attempted to restore from the system image the following message was returned. What could be wrong with the above steps?

    The system image restore failed.
    Error details: Windows did not find any disk which it can use for recreating volumes present in backup. Offline disks, cluster shared disks or disks explicitly excluded by user will not be used by Windows. Ensure that disks are online and no disks are excluded by mistake.(0x80042414).

    Restoring W7 from VHD onto new HDD

    I once posted the following in this forum:

    I have done restoring the vhd file to a partition where the original os resides. It appears also possible to restore the backup to a brand new hard drive instead. Is it correct?

    And replies were that the above was correct.

    Now I am having difficulty doing this. It appears that the restore process automatically pick a partition where to restore to. It seems to be an active primary partition of a physical hdd in highest boot order. Is this correct?

    I assumed the above was correct, attempted restoring VHD image and got to the end of the process but with the following error message:

    Re-image your computer.
    The system image restore failed.
    Error details:
    Windows did not find any disk while it can use for recreating volumes present in backup. Offline disks, cluster shared disk or disks explicitly excluded by user will not be used by Windows. Ensure that disks are online and no disks are excluded by mistake.(0x80042414)

    In the above error message, what does "cluster shared disk" means?

    VHD to physical hard disk

    @churin

    Hi, have you been able to transfer your VHD content to physical hard disk and then boot up using your physical hard disk ?? Assuming that your VHD contains not only data but the compete OS.

    No, I have not been. I gave up and assumed that it was not possibe because nobody responded saying he could do that. Since then I have been using one of the third party utilities to do it.

    It is Acronis True Image Home 2010. I also got O&O Disk Image Pro, but after evaluating the former I liked it so I never tried the latter. Feature of O&O Disk Image also includes ability to restore OS system onto a different hardware system.

    @churin

    hey thanks a lot for your quick replies...

    could you tell me one more thing... about the tool you are already using...

    if I have attached a VM (virtual machine) to a VHD and have installed things there... new softwars, windows update and may be anti-virus updates.. etc. etc..

    and now using your tool, if I convert the VHD into a physical hard disk using your third party tool... can I use those softwares (from physical disk) which i installed into VHD using VM... will the windows updates still be at place... ??

    I do not know much about VM: I once dabbled in it or followed the tutorial in this forum, attached VHD and booted from it. That's all I knew about it.
    I am not sure if I understood your question, but Acronis TI2010(True Image 2010) is claimed to be able to convert a VHD into an image in TI2010's format. I have never tried this, but if this is true, then the os system can be restored from this converted disk image by using TI2010. If you have current need for this, why don't you try and post back.
