Hi all, good forum here. My computer running windows 7 64 bit has been a bit buggy lately so I have been trying to run system restore but instead of taking 20 minutes it constantly reads "in progress". I have let it run like that for over ten hours straight to no avail and have tried different restore points. Any suggestions?
Why are you trying to go to a restore point? Many virus,trojen, ect. will stop you from going to a restore point. Some won't let you go on line. Some won't let you run security programs. Tell us a little more. Have you run and security scans to make sure your computer is clean?
^ .:) I am closely tracking this thread as one who had for the first time experienced a similar problem with my new Dell lappie a week ago.
My lappie was and is pristine clean. But yet it happened and that and what followed to restore my lappie was a nerve-wracking experience and more mysteries rolled through..
The OP here has put up with more than 10 hours patiently. I lost my patience after about an hour or so.:)

I am trying to go to a restore point because in the past, if my computer was having issues like I am now, such as the web browser crashing, I have had success by running a system restore to an earlier point. I scanned the computer using windows defender and Ad-aware ant-spyware. At one point recently the windows defender was turned off, which I did not turn off myself so I am suspicious that there may be some malware. If it is indeed a virus or spyware, how can I rid my computer of it at this point? Thanks again.
No what you have failed to do is turn defender off - this is what Microsoft recommends when your using other antivirus/malware programs otherwise it runs in the background doubling the load on your PC (if it can cope with the extra load) - you can disable it within the program, and recommended by Microsoft that you do this prior to installing other antivrus/malware programs - but if the PC runs ok after disabling defender don't worry.
I would be relying on a "good" image rather than a restore point. Typical 50GB reimage should take ~ 30 min.
Although restore points are a necessary part of Windows 7 I don't use or trust them to recover from a bad situation.

Windows Defender is primarily an antispyware utility. It is not an antivirus. It's possible that you may have malware other than spyware on your machine.

You could see if you can download and install Microsoft Security Esentials (a free antivirus and antispyware from here.) You could also try running another free tool, Microsoft Safety Scanner. This is the MS version of an on-demand scanner called Malwarebytes. You may have to download and install these tools in Safe Mode.

If you can install, make sure to update before running. I'd suggest full scans rather than the quick scans. If you install MSE it will automatically turn off Windows Defender so there isn't any conflict.
