Have a look here System Restore Point, and here
System Restore. These tutorials should help you along nicely.

My recommendation after working with quite a few clients with xp and windows 7 is to go to a commercial product called Acronis true image. For less than $30 you get a program that will create an image of your drive(s) on an external drive and can completely restore your system to the state that it was when the image was created. Of course windows 7 allows you to create a system image internally which does work pretty darn good.

I just like the Acronis software as I can set it to create an image on a scheduled basis as well as do an incremental backup on schedule. There is the option to do file backups on a scheduled basis also.

I buy my acronis from the user group store for about $25. It just works great and I have never been dissapointed when I went to restore an image.

    Just works fine.

I don't have any financial interests in ugr.com but I do like the people who are very helpful. User Group Store is their site.
