How do you suggest he does that?

The pc won't boot, obviously.

He has the repair cd.

Any ideas how to mount the vhd and make a macrium image of it - then restore that image - with only the repair cd to work with?

It's a shame - I can do all that easily with my winpe3 media.

One way is to get hold of another pc running win 7 and attach it.

Probably easier just to get a win7 install iso - doesn't matter what it is - you have 30 days grace.

Install that. Then do the mount and image with macrium from within that new installation.

Yes obviously the image must be mounted on another machine, then reimaged back to the same HD using the Macrium boot disk. Macrium - Image your system

After swapping the HD back into the target machine, boot the Macrium disk to reimage with much more flexibility.

But first I would wipe the target HD to see if it will then accept the Win7 backup image via the Repair CD, and if not what the exact error message is this time. System Image Recovery

If you had RAID0 when you made the image, then breaking the RAID before reimaging is likely why it couldn't find enough space to reimage.

I wonder if making the 15gb partition was necessary since it should reimage to empty disks.

Glad you got it worked out. To make your image failsafe in the future, suggest you use both Win7 and Macrium.
