Windows 7: Cannot create restore points

Cannot create restore points

Hi all,

I am attempting to help a friend who has an HP TouchSmart PC running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. He recently purchased an iPad and after connecting it, was prompted to update his iTunes, but could not. The update hangs. After investigating a bit, I've been able to determine that it is hanging when it attempts to create a restore point. In fact, I can't do Windows updates because they hang at the point where it is attempting to create a restore point. The system isn't locked up, I can close things out just fine, but it will not create a restore point.

If I attempt to turn system restore off, following the instructions in Help and Support, I see the following screen:
Name: Sys_Prop.JPG
Views: 29
Size: 42.3 KB
It never finds any drives, it just sits there "Searching..."

In the Application Event Log there are some VSS errors. Event ID 11 followed by Event ID 12292.
In the System Event Log I also see some Distributed COM errors, Event ID 10016.

I've searched on these events, but so far my searches have not lead me to anything that has worked. I found a thread here that spoke about turning System Restore off and then back on again, but when I couldn't do that, I thought I'd give this a shot and see if anyone here might have an idea.

The Volume Shadow Copy service is started.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to read the post!

Damon

Run your anti virus and make a full scan
Download and make a full scan with malwarebytes. What you describe may be a trick of a virus writer to protect his work, since you can help remove a virus with system restore.

Just a quick check: a similar situation might occur if the PC has limited local admin rights, ie like a business pc given out to company users with a central or outsourced servicemanagement.

Is this friends PC a private buy?

Thanks to both of you for your replies. This is a friend's PC that he purchased from a store brand new.

It came with a copy of McAfee Plus which he purchased and it is up to date. I did a quick scan with Malware Bytes and it found no infections, but I will attempt to run a full scan.

I forgot to post in my original posting that I experience this same behavior when I boot into safe mode.

Thanks!

If we trust the AV and Malware check then this is what we can check next...

Did you enable the UAC on your system?
Please temporarily disable the UAC to check if it works.

If that doesn't work, try your Event Viewer and upload its logs.

I'm at work at the moment, so I'll have to check this evening. I believe the UAC is enabled, so I can disable that tonight. I can also do a full scan with Malware Byites as opposed to a quick scan to see if it yields different results.

I can also upload the event logs. Is there an instructional post out here that explains the best way to upload event logs?

Okay, I tried disabling the UAC and rebooted, but I still had the same result.

So, I followed the steps in the linked post for the BSOD upload. I'll attach that to this post.

One thing I noted in the performance summary is that it does not detect an antivirus program, but I can see that McAfee AntiVirus Plus is installed and working.

I'll now start a full scan of the system using Malware Bytes. (I had done a quick scan, but it did not detect anything.)

Thanks for the help!

Something is very wrong here, most of the data we need is not in the files. Not even msinfo

Please turn UAC back on. Then reboot in Safe Mode and run SFC Scannow multiple times, if needed. Then use any way that you know of to show us the hard disk and volume setup and post a BSOD upload again please. Tutorial for SFC:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
