I suggest you download Hirens Boot CD ver 14.0. It has a Macrium pe capability as part of its mini XP environment. I've tested it and it works.
This is not the same as the linux boot environment you are using. The linux boot environment generally works and I use it.
Please excuse my intrusion on this thread.

Will this work to restore an image made with Macrium (free) on Windows 7? The issue I have is that the rescue CD I made from Macrium (free) does not see my WD external drive.
Yes, that should work. Is your external disk attached via USB3 - this is not supported by the Linux program.

It's an older WD drive and uses USB2 as far as I know.

I wen't to a PE environment for the same reason. I found that the linux rescue CD would not reliably locate my external USB drive. I could get it to work most times but shutting down completely, waiting for about a minute and then restarting the external USB drives well before attempting to boot the PC. It also doesn't help if the USB drive is on an external USB Hub.

In reading more I found this statement Image your system with free Macrium saying: "Hirens boot CD (free) v13 has Macrium pe built in if that's important to you. I've tried it and it works fine. Although the restore is a 32 bit app., as you might expect, it has no effect on restoring 64 bit images like mine."

Will Macrium not restore to 64 bit?

    I'm a bit confused......Well maybe a lot confused

Yes it will. The PE environment here is 32 bit. That has no effect on restoring to a 64bit Windows.

The Linux rescue CD is 32bit.

BTW, I have the same issue with the Macrium CD. I think it may be the Sandy Bridge system that for some reason will not boot from it. It does boot from other linux based systems. I use Parted Magic frequently. I will try the Hirens. I already have it on USB drive with a lot of other programs including Windows 7 installation disk.

Interesting observation regarding Sandy Bridge. I never had any problm with the Linux restore disk - but I have no Sandy Bridge CPU's. My most recent CPU is a traditional i7, and that works fine.

That's just a guess on my part. I have another Intel, had an AMD and others that it booted fine. This Sandy Bridge will get to the splash screen and freeze. I noticed that the person in the first post had a Sandy Bridge also. I really don't know, but I boot and run other linux based programs on here with no problems. I sent an email to Macrium about it. I know they don't support the free version but just thought they may want to be aware. Again, it is just a guess on my part.

Thank you for clearing that up. I tried Macrium (Free) and liked it Hirens Boot CD should make it possible for me to try it again.
