Windows 7: How to create an image of my HD & do a restore

Hello all,
I have read a lot how to create a backup.
And a few on how to restore. How ever I
am still unsure how the whole process comes
together. Could someone give me intsuctions on
how to do this from creating an image to doing
the restore, I have tried doing but was not very
successful.
Any help will be appreciated.

Before I do the the restore do I have
to do anything prior to the restore?
Will the restore over write the the old
files or will I have to manually delete
the old files? Will I have two copies on
my HD of the Win.7 system?

If you are talking about an image restore it will overwrite the entire drive. If you are talking about a file/folder restore you get the option of overwriting or restoring to a new location.
