Erecovery Management- Backing up disk is stuck at 3%

    Hi,
I am having some trouble backing up my acer laptop from erecovery management. The reason I am doing this is because I started having problems with it a few days ago. My web browser would not connect to the internet even though the wireless was showing it was connected. The problem said it was a DNS Server Error. Also I saw in the bottom right corner that it said- chk dsk utility corrupted. I took it to the store and they said I most likely have to reformat but first I must backup my computer. I began to back up my files on a dvd through erecovery management. Recovery 1 burnt onto the disk within 15 minutes but now it has been stuck on the verification process at 3% for 50 minutes. My computer is not frozen because the elapsed verification time it still running.

I would like to know what is the issue and what should I do about it.

    Thanks for the help.

I started writing an answer and then realize that a little info would help.

Were you taking the acer back to a store where you purchased the acer?

    How old is the laptop?

Model may turn out to be useful.

Have you contacted the Acer forum to see about purchasing recovery/restore disks?

I don't know what an erecovery disc is.

There are several acer owners around who can better answer those questions. Depending upon the info you receive and the choice you indicate that you are considering then I can better advise.

    Hey,
Thanks for your reply. Okay here is the info I have
    1) Yes I took it to the store I bought it from. It had bought a extended 2 year warranty but they said that reformatting and backing up disks is not included in it.

    2) I bought it in October 2010.

    3) It is an Acer Aspire 5742-7151

    4) I am supposed to create the recovery disk myself, which is what I am trying to do and it is stuck in the verification process at 3%. Erecovery management is the program you use in Acer to create the recovery or backup disks.

    OK.

    Run check disk

go to an elevated command prompt.

    enter folllowing:

    CHKDSK /R

followed by hitting the ENTER key

    type following:
    EXIT
    and hit the enter key

    REBOOT your computer.

    Now is all ok?

    Hi,
No it is not working. The command prompt box will not open. I just called Acer technical support and they said it seems as though the partition that contains my operating system is corrupt so it will not allow me to create the backup disks. I need to reformat my laptop and buy the backup recovery disks from them : (

    Saira,

I fear that they may by correct but we still have a couple of aces up the sleeve to be played.

Go to a wording Win 7 system with the same "bittiness" as yours, ie, 32 bit or 64 bit, and make a system repair disc.

Boot from the system repair disc, go to a command prompt, and run chkdsk but this time be sure and specify the drive, which will probably be C: ,in other words,

    Chkdsk C: /R

Here are some "how to" infos.

    CREATE A SYSTEM REPAIR DISC

START | type System Repair | Enter key | Create Disc button
GO TO A COMMAND PROMPT USING A SYSTEM REPAIR DISC

    1) Insert System Repair Disc into optical reader.
    2) Shutdown computer.
    3) Boot up computer from the System Repair Disc
If your computer doesn’t boot from the optical drive, then
Immediately after pushing your Power ON button,
start tapping the F2 key to get to the BIOS to change the boot order

On some computers, Immediately after pushing the Power ON button, start tapping the F12 key and choose CD/DVD to change the boot order only for this time.
    4) Wait while a mini-version of Windows is loaded and finally the SYSTEM RECOVERY OPTIONS dialog appears.
    5) NEXT | SYSTEM RECOVERY OPTIONS dialog
will search your system for installed versions of Windows.
    6) select the Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows radio button |
    7) NEXT | Choose Command Prompt

Run desired commands and type EXIT when finished.
    Remove the System Repair Disc.
    Shutdown computer.
    Power on computer.

Thanks for your help karlsnooks but I already began reformatting when I checked your message. I guess I was just too eager to get my computer running again. I am in the process of reformatting at the moment.

Thanks again for taking the time to understand my problem and trying to help me resolve it.

One of my PCs is an ACER Aspire desktop so I know what eRecovery is about etc.

    However,
It is my belief that you are being given the run around by both the store and ACER. Your problem should be within the 12 month ACER warranty never mind the extended 2 year warranty.
Unless things are very different in the US hard disk (HDD) problems are covered.
If either the store or ACER claim you voided warranty by formatting your HDD tell them that you were advised by the store to do so as you mentioned above. Sure, backing up your PC is your business but that is all. If the backup capability fails it is the store/ACER's business while the PC is under warranty.

Did the ACER tech or the store mention anything about an "alt F10" factory restore?

    Demand your rights.
I am happy to provide some technical support if needed.

    Hello mjf,
Yes the tech at the store told me about alt f10 when I tried to do it, it got stuck at 44%. When I called Acer technical support they told me that reason it is not working is because the partition that contains my OS is corrupted. The person at the store told me that reformatting my laptop was not covered under warranty because it is related to Windows. I will call the store again to inquire. Thanks!
