Hello Codeword,

From looking at the Microsoft KB article below, running a chkdsk /R command for each drive letter may be able to help. Afterwards, see if you may be able to do the system image recovery.

Error message when you try to perform a full backup on a Windows Vista-based computer: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

Hope this helps,
Shawn

ok so i go to start type in cmd.exe run as admin and then type in chkdsk /R.

if this is correct then i have enother problem.... it says that chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. would you have any idea what that would be or what certain things i could look for.

You could do OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to run the chkdsk (drive letter): /R command at boot for each drive letter (ex: backup drive and drive to be restored to).

Disk Check

That's great news Codeword. As long as you do not keep getting this error, then there's no need to do anything else.
