Cannot restore system image to back up. Error 0x80070002
I have been having some real trouble with my Backup and Restore.
I have a DELL XPS M1530 that originally had Windows Vista, and I upgraded it to Windows 7 Home edition. I have service pack 1 and run a 32-bit operating system.
The first problem that I have been having for months is when I click on "Backup and Restore" from the Maintenance file in the Start menu, there are several buttons/text on the screen that do not work when I click on them. The things that do not work are:
-back up now
All the other buttons or text on the screen seems to work fine when I try to click on it. For the most part, I've been able to "sneak" around this issue.
However, I just purchased a new external harddrive that had more storage capacity to do my automatically scheduled weekly computer backups (from the Backup and Restore menu). I used it for the first time last week and it worked just fine.
However, this week when it tried to do the scheduled back up, the back up failed.
The first notification said that a shadow image/file could not be found (I don't know the exact wording on that, because I did not write it down). So I just clicked "re-try to run backup".
Now I can't remember which happened first next. Either I formatted the external HD (because a box popped up and told me it needed to be) which then erased my backup from last week .... or else I first tried to run the back up again to which I got an error message saying "system file cannot be specified."
I eventually clicked on the Help topic that explained I needed to restore the system image and/or create a system repair disc.
I tried to restore the system image on my external HD twice, but it gave me the error code 0x80070002 the first time, and then gave me the error code 0x80070003 the second time I tried to resotre the system image to the external hard drive.
I just want the darned back up to run!! I've had so many issues with these stupid laptops from DELL. My old laptop crashed 3 times (had to replace the motherboard twice, the hard drive, the LCD screen, the heat sink, and a bunch of other stuff) until I finally convinced those losers to send me a "new" one. What I got was a refurbished piece of junk that seems to do no better, because now I have issues like this where my backup program is clearly corrupted.
Any advice on what to do to fix it?
