Can't Create Drive Image When trying to create a system image using Windows 'Backup and Restore' to my external hdd I get the following error: Backup failed. The drive cannot find the sector requested (0x8007001b)'
This wasn't occurring until after I did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium.
Any help will be appreciated.

How far into the backup process did this occur?
I would guess this error is from the source drive (the drive(s) to be backed up) as I would think System Image looks a that the volume's bitmap, collects all the sectors that need to be written, and then writes them to your USB output drive as a "sequential" file (only used blocks written, butted up next to each other, no freespace). IOW, there are "direct" sector/cluster reads of the source drives and the output is simply written to a .vhd file of which the I/O is handled by a standard Win API. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom OS Windows 7 CPU AMD Phenom II X2 (dual-core) Motherboard GA-MA785GM-US2H Memory 4G Graphics Card integrated ATI HD 4200 Sound Card integrated Monitor(s) Displays Samsung 24" Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Microsoft Digital Media Pro Mouse Logitech WIRED! The error is occurring right near the end of the backup attempt. | My System Specs

1) How much data are you attempting to image (eg. 30GB)?
2) How much free space do you have on your ext HDD?
3) Are you doing a Windows "Let Windows choose" backup including an image AND a file/folder backup?
4) Have you scanned your ext HDD for errors? If not try the manufacturer's diagnostic tool or the Windows inbuilt sector scan. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Own build (+ Recased Acer Aspire x1800) OS Windows 7x64 Home Premium SP1 x 2 CPU Intel i7 2600k Motherboard ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Memory G.Skill Ripjaws (DDR3-1600) 2x4GB Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTS 450; Intel HD Graphics 3000(GT2+) Monitor(s) Displays Dell Ultrasharp IPS panel U2311H, Samsung SyncMaster P2350 Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech MK520 (wireless) Mouse Logitech MK520 PSU Seasonic M12II 520W Case Lian Li Lancool PC-K60 Cooling Case: 1x120mm, 3x140mm CPU: Hyper 212+ Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB (000F), Seagates 1TB Barracuda ST31000528AS + Internet Speed 6-7 Mbps Antivirus Norton NIS, Malwarebytes on 2 (MSE on 3rd PC) Browser FireFox Other Info Audio: Logitech Z523 2.1 |

1) The size is 39.7 GB.
2) My external HDD has 417 GB free.
3) Not surer what you mean. In Windows "Back and Restore" it simply searches for a backup device and it selects the external HDD which is the only other drive. Then I click "Start Backup".
4) Yes I have scanned for errors and I also defragmented it. I used third party software. But where might I find Windows sector scan? | My System Specs

I researched the actual Win32 API error code (sector not found) but can't find someone who has explained WHY that error gets returned (i.e. what does the app have to do incorrectly or what could happen hardware-wise to receive the error). | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom OS Windows 7 CPU AMD Phenom II X2 (dual-core) Motherboard GA-MA785GM-US2H Memory 4G Graphics Card integrated ATI HD 4200 Sound Card integrated Monitor(s) Displays Samsung 24" Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Microsoft Digital Media Pro Mouse Logitech WIRED! James, if you want my advice, use another imaging program (free Macrium or free Paragon would be good choices). Windows 7 imaging will give you nothing but trouble.
And I know mjf will disagree. But he is a Windows 7 imaging expert. I don't disagree Wolfgang. Using Macrium is a pragmatic solution - you know I use it.
But it would be nice to know the cause of the error. I didn't think images needed to be contiguous files??? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Own build (+ Recased Acer Aspire x1800) OS Windows 7x64 Home Premium SP1 x 2 CPU Intel i7 2600k Motherboard ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Memory G.Skill Ripjaws (DDR3-1600) 2x4GB Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTS 450; Intel HD Graphics 3000(GT2+) Monitor(s) Displays Dell Ultrasharp IPS panel U2311H, Samsung SyncMaster P2350 Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech MK520 (wireless) Mouse Logitech MK520 PSU Seasonic M12II 520W Case Lian Li Lancool PC-K60 Cooling Case: 1x120mm, 3x140mm CPU: Hyper 212+ Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB (000F), Seagates 1TB Barracuda ST31000528AS + Internet Speed 6-7 Mbps Antivirus Norton NIS, Malwarebytes on 2 (MSE on 3rd PC) Browser FireFox Other Info Audio: Logitech Z523 2.1 |

From your vantage point you are right Michael. You care somewhat about Windows 7 imaging. But I have just written it off and go the pragmatic route - as you call it. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP, Dell, Gateway, Toshiba - 4 laptops and 2 desktops OS Vista, Windows7, Mint Mate, Zorin, Windows 8 CPU from 1.6GHz Duo to i7 Monitor(s) Displays 2x HP w2207 Keyboard with trackball - no mices Mouse Trackball mice Hard Drives 5x HDD, 7x SSD, 12x Externals Internet Speed DSL 6000 |

I installed Macrium Reflect and it created a disk image with no problem. I think I'll stick with Reflect. Thing went ok except when I created my rescue media. Reflect downloaded the AIK which took some time. | My System Specs | | Can't Create Dive Image problems? All times are GMT -5. The time now is 07:44 PM.
