There is not enough free space to restore the disk - System Restore

Running Windows 7 Home Premium on a laptop with 390 GB unused HD space.

I want to restore to an earlier date, but I get a message: "There is not enough free space to restore the disk" even if I try to restore it to two days ago.

    What can I do?

    Hi, abredt.
Could you kindly attach a screenshot of Disk Management displaying all drives and partitions?
    Thanks

This is usually a sign of a rootkit infection.

Kindly run this tool from Kaspersky

    Perfect.

As there doesn't seem to be a problem showing in Disk Management, I would ask if you have noticed any other untoward/unwanted behaviour from the machine in question? (Basically: What has initiated the desire to restore the machine?)
If you feel that the machine is virus/malware free, try running chkdisk > option 1_6. Then defragment the drive. Try to restore the system again.
What (if any) active (runs in the background) antispyware/malware/virus protection is on the machine?

My desktop and this laptop stopped printing to some of my networked printers. Both are Windows 7 Home Premium. A few days later, the desktop gave me a "Your computer was not able to start" message and Startup Repair ran and said it failed. I was able to clear it all up by restoring the desktop to before a recent Windows Update. I ran Spybot Search and Destroy on the desktop and it was clean.

So, I wanted to restore the laptop to before the windows Update.

Both run McAfee Total Protection and are updated.

    Twilight Zone.

I decided to try one more restore before doing the suggestions.
Voila, it worked. I restored it to 3 weeks ago and ran a McAfee full scan - no problems.

    Thanks for your posts.
