    Acronis Disk Director

Okay, just a note for everyone, just in case: do not try to install Acronis OS Selector (part of Disk Director) from within Windows 7. First, it will not detect your Windows 7 installation. Second, when I disabled it again it completely ruined my Master Boot Record.

It took me more than two hours to recover the Master Boot Record. Acronis and Microsoft made it very difficult for me to fix it The bootmgr.exe was totally gone. Then the Vista (the original boot manager was from Vista) recovery DVD somehow set a Dell Diagnostics partition to boot up and my Vista and 7 installations were seen by the recovery DVD, but bootrec.exe didn't recognize them. I tried everything to fix the MBR with bcdedit.exe and it looked good, but somehow it still booted the Dell partition. I ended up using GParted Live on an MP3 player, lol, since I had no USB stick laying around! I could set the boot flag to my Vista drive again and after that the Vista recovery DVD recognized everything and the Startup Repair finally did it's job!

Sorry, for the details, but if this happens to you, then you know how to fix that stuff now

I can confirm that there is a problem. I installed director, I had already Acronis True image. I thought little of it until I decided to make an updated image. I used the pure image autoboot disk, and it said it would take 6 hours (after sitting doing nothing for about 5 minutes. From my previous 30 to 40 minutes, this was ridiculous. Even after uninstaling Director, and reinstalling True Image, I found heavy delays in some areas of my computer. To cut a long story short, I looked around and found this: (It's free)

Free Drive Backup Express - disk backup software

I found it superb. For example, it can back up Vista, a mammoth installation, in 40 minutes. You can also make an autoboot disk - a very good fallback feature.

I regret forking out cash for Acronis now!!

    HI Davehc,

I use Paragon products, too - but that Express version is very limited.

You may like to check out the free version of Macrium to make images of partitions/drives.

It's small , fast , you can choose compression levels, schedule backups , mount an image and copy & paste back files rather than restore the whole image . It also makes a bootable cd of course.

    Hope it helps

    Ok

If you uninstall it which im guessing you did. Youll get an MBR3 error. There is a fix (lost the link) which you have to burn to a cd. Boot from it and follow instructions. After that (for me) youll have to repair your OS. Just boot up your OS disc and choose repair.

Thanks also, SWI2. I'll have a look at that.

I've just given that Macrium a whirl. It seems very good. Only minor complaint was that the default boot disk (Linux)you can make, only gave the restore option. The second choice (bart) was the one I found I needed - both restore and save.

Thanks a lot for the Heads up.

I'm having real trouble with Acronis Disk Director. Whatever I do I just can't seem to be able to remove it from my system.

I managed to fix my MBR but I just can't get the program off my system. Every time I try and remove it it tells me it can't detect an OS... I at least managed to disable it now but I just want rid of it.

Does anyone know of a way to successfully uninstall it from Windows 7?

    Hi,

Try running this free app. - it's brilliant - don't worry, it works great on 32 and 64 bit systems.

Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs, Solve uninstall problems

Use the Advanced Scan, like this :

    Acronis Disk Director-revo2009-01-23_033307.jpg

If that still doesn't get rid of it, try system restore to a point before you installed the Disk Selector.

Phew finally got rid of it. That thing's been giving me a headache all night.

Had to use a restore point in the end because revo used the Acronis installer which was what was being difficult.

Thanks SIW2 maybe I can finally get on with that install :).
