Thing is, I want to restore my Firefox bookmarks, not IE favourites.
I can locate my bookmarks in Firefox profiles, but they are in .json and I can't open them. Grrr
Have you tried restoring bookmarks from Bookmarks/show all bookmarks/import and backup?

Normally one keeps the bookmarks in FF and IE manually synchronized. If you also did that then import the IE favorites into FF.
