Yes you can create a back up of your C drive to the D drive. Of course you should have the D partition first to be able to save the backup.

See this tutorial: Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

You don't need a SEPARATE partition, no. You can put the backup on D, anywhere you choose, assuming it will fit.

I tried doing what was suggested and here's the snapshot: I always use the free Macrium Reflect for Backup OR Imaging.

I'm not an expert in anything but it looks like you're trying to backup/image the contents of the C: drive onto itself (destination = C:\).

That is correct. You cannot store an image on the drive you are backing up. I don't see the D: drive you mentioned in the screenshot.

    Dear friends,
That's the point i wanted to make! When Dinesh said that you do need another partition to backup, the following post which i've quoted above, sort of contradicted by saying that you "don't need a SEPARATE partition,no". Just wanted you folks chipping in and giving the @OP ,the answer which does not confuse, but clarify!
    Regards,

The OP said "i want to make a back up of my os c:drive, on to my d:drive so do i have to make a partition first to put it on".

The answer is no. An image of C can be stored on D, which has already been made. There is no need to "make a partition first".

Sreedhav: I don't know what you have done. Obviously an image of C cannot be stored on C, but that it not what the OP asked about.

When you backup, it needs to be on a different hard drive than what the C drive is. Putting your backup on the same HD will not help if it gets corrupted.

Unless I'm reading the screenshot wrong, it looks like "D" is your optical drive.
