Windows 7: System Restore Failed.

I connected to look over Duchess' loaded Dell preinstall. It lacked SP1 so we instaled that but it didn't solve the System Restore failure, nor did SFC. So we downloaded the latest ISO for her Dell and did a Repair Install which fixed the problem. It was quite an interesting two evenings.

Yes indeed!! And a fine job you did too.

Only one little thing remains. Now I have to go to Control Panel > System > Properties tab and select Create. I was asked to create a Restore Point (which I did and most successfully too). But I would like to create a shortcut for System Restore or System Properties and place it on the Task Bar. That's the way it was and I'd like to have it that way again.

Can you please show me how that is done? I sure would appreciate it.

I want to thank you Greg for all the help you so freely gave to me.

Type System Restore in Start Search box, rightclick on result, select Pin To Taskbar.

You can do this with almost anything in the Start>All Programs menu, which is also where System Restore resides under Accessories>System Tools.

Thanks Greg, but that's only good for restoring a previous date, I need to create a restore point via a shortcut. I tried your method before I posted here and tried it again after I read your post. I can create one doing it the long way, but the shortcut method is preferred.

Got any other tricks up your sleeve?

I just can't seem to do any thing right. All I got for my trouble is: Problem with shortcut. The name C:\Program Files\Restore Point Message shortcut\RP-Success-Message.vbs is not valid.

I printed the tutorial and thought I had followed it to the letter, but I must have done something wrong along the way. Looks like I need your help again, TV7 is still on my desktop.

Sorry to be such an itch.

Hello Duchess,

I just tested the shortcut from step 4 in OPTION ONE, and it works perfectly fine for me. Double check that you have unblocked both the shortcut and VBS file, and the you did step 8 and 9 exactly to move the extracted folder with the VBS file in it and not just the VBS file.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks Brink for your excellent tutorial. I don't understand what you mean by unblocking the shortcut and the VBS file. Please explain how to check them.

I do know that VBS is in Services and on Manual but not started, should I start it?

I think you know that Greg fixed System Restore for me. I just have two System Restore Programs, one for creating a restore point and the other for reverting to a different date and time. No problem, it's just different. What I had before had all options in one window. System Restore is working, I manually created one when I signed on this morning.

Kiddos to both you and Greg

You're welcome Duchess.

Steps 7 and 12 in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below can help show you how to "unblock" (click on link in steps) those files before moving them to the locations in the steps afterwards.

Duchess, is the Create System Restore Point shortcut on your desktop working now to add a new Restore Point?

It was working fine when we installed and tested it yesterday.

If so is this not exactly what you want?

The only other way I know to put System Restore on your desktop is to pin it's Program to your Taskbar as given in Post 23 which you said doesn't allow you to Create a Restore Point.
