    HP dv7 will only go into a black screen...not even bootscreen

    This is a lot to explain so I will try to explain the best I can.

    Yesterday I got a weirs virus that played audio ads in the background even with no browser opened... when I ran Avast to try to get rid of it all my icons on my computer disappeared. I booted into safe mode to try to do a system recovery but it was stuck in initilizing stage forever and the computer lights weren't blinking so I just shut it off.

    At that point my dad took over and I'm not sure what he did, but when he shut it off again it would not boot into windows or any other windows mode. It won't even go to the screen with the windows 7 logo or the options for safe mode. Its just black.

    I went into Knoppix to back up all my files from windows and I was going to attement to do a factory reset on the laptop. But stupid me forgot to make the disks when I got my laptop.

    So anyway we used an extra windows 7 DVD to try to repair it and I tried to restore my computer to the point it was two weeks ago, it said it was successful but the black screen was still there when I rebooted. I also did a startup repair, but again nothing.

    Is there anyway to fix this without having to completely reinstall windows? Because I don't want to go through all that trouble just to find it boots into a.black screen again.

    *an interesting not is that even though the partition showed up in Knoppix and it showed up with all of my files it said the size of the drive was O bytes

    You could try using the Recovery partition on your hard drive to get back to factory condition.

    When it first starts booting start tapping the one of these keys.

    F11=System Recovery
    F9=Diagnostics

    Did you get a manual with your HP or did you copy the .pdf manual on the hard drive to another computer? There might be more information about using the Recovery partition.

    Other options at boot are

    Esc=Boot Menu
    F10=Setup bios

    Your HP came from the factory with a Recovery partition on the hard drive. You don't need to use Recovery DVD's as long as the drive is not damaged.
