    Restore Points Dead

Wife's computer will not restore to ANY of the 40 or so restore points. She created a restore point, installed a program then decided it was not what she wanted. When she attempted to restore, she immediately gets an error message - System restore did not complete. blah blan. The parameter is incorrect 0x80070057. Tried safe mode and a couple other things with same results. I can create a new restore points but they will not work either. Malwarebytes found nothing. Turned restore off and then back on. Ran chkdsk /r which found nothing. MS Fix It says it cannot automatically fix this computer.

Have no idea how long this has been an issue as she does not remember the last time she used restore. Computer runs great with no other issues.
    Any suggestions?

    Ron

I had a similar problem with my Windows refusing to restore to previously saved points and found out it was related to my antivirus (at the time Kaspersky). Make sure to disable any security software you have installed on your PC.

I would end the software's processes and also disable its startup entries from msconfig: Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Then restart the PC, make sure the AV is not running and then try to restore once again.

Tried disabling MSE, doing a safe boot in msconfig, spybot and sfc scannow but no help.

Try running System Restore from System Recovery Options.

When you look at the drives being protected in System Protection is there a second C listing named "Recovered?" This requires turning off SysProtection on C and turning it on on the Recovered listing. I would also apportion more disk space and make sure settings are correct in Change Disk Space Usage.

gregrocker, already tried restore from system recovery using the Win 7 disk with no luck. Only her primary C: is listed, no recovery listed. Had not thought about restore allotted size but it is set at 24%.

    Should be plenty.

    Try running SFC -SCANNOW Command,

then work through these other Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 to establish a Clean Boot, scan logs for repeat errrors, utliize System Resources to find and solve problems. These lead up to possible Repair Install or Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 - you only need to get it perfect once then can rely on Win7 backup image in place of future reinstalls.

    Hi anaron,

Just wondering what the error message you're getting is? Does it look like this:

Burdus77, the last few times I'm getting details: System restore failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. The restore point was damaged or deleted during the restore.

Have not got the 0x80070057 error today.

Have you tried doing a System Restore from the Startup Recovery Menu?

Also, have a look at this link:

Cannot open system restore point program (0x80070057 erro) - - Microsoft Answers

If the worst comes to worst, you could try a repair install Repair Install

It will preserve all your programs and user accounts. But, I would use that as a last resort. Let's see if it can be resolved here before trying that.
