Failing Disk Deletes Backup Data-Need More Info - Feature Name

    Hi,

Sorry for asking this again but my problem was that one of my drives partially failed and deleted all folders beginning with letters K through Z. When my backup script ran it deleted all of the same folders on the backup drive.

I received a reply from a user (don't have access to the name right now) who suggested a freeware sync package which most likely would work. However, company policy states that no freeware is to be run on our systems. While I could probably get away with it a question comes to mind - Why isn't this a standard feature in commercially available backup software. There must be a name for this type of option. I'm new to this backup task that was off loaded on me so please forgive me if I'm asking an obvious question.

Does anyone know of a commercially available package and / or what this feature might be called? I can't be the only person who has run into this problem.

    Thanks Again,

    Larry

I was that user and recommended FreeFileSync which does versioning. I haven't really looked at commercial software so I'm sorry I can't help with that, but I'll ask if others will respond.

Would this package be any good to you?

One option that I always use and recommend is Microsoft's own SyncToy, This is a free piece of software, of course so may not be allowed under your company policy, However it is In my opinion more of an optional extra, than a freeware, that should have been included in the actual OS, so it is possible that it could be allowed

The problem with Synctoy is that it does not version and therefore would not provide the protection needed.

Is it not possible to use the built in Versioning in windows?, though of course I would suggest a different backup regimen, to give full protection.

For commercial data you really need a Grandfather-Father-Son system, or similar, and with offsite backup storage, the built in Versioning with recent Microsoft OS's is a good addition to the actual backup for covering user based errors

Not quite what you were aking for but the professional edition of Macrium Reflect does File and Folder backup and can do full, incremental and differentials on a scheduled basis. Macrium Business
