Windows Backup backing up @ 5mb/s

I want to backup my data partition using windows backup to an external drive connected with eSata and it's only backing up at around 5mb/s. I set it to backup the whole partition. I've done alot research and apperently this has been a well known problem but that was 2 years ago. I can't find anything about this problem from today. Also, I haven't found any fix that worked. Why is Windows backup being so slow and why is there no one complaining about it nowadays? Either alot of people stopped having this problem or they don't care/don't use it.

I've tried checking the driver policies and it's set to performance. I've found some hotfix but according to the description that won't solve my problem.

I also know about other backup solutions like Paragon backup and recovery or acronis but those don't offer incremental backups.

Anyone know how to make Windows Backup work faster? Or does at least anyone else have the same problem? Just wondering because I didn't find any threads from 2012 or even 2011 with google. Most are over 2 years old

I don't know about making it faster, but I would recommend switching to another program. Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download This is a free one and it works like a charm. It backs up your whole drive each time, not just the new stuff, but it works and is very reliable and is free.

    I know that program.
I don't want to backup the whole drive every single time for various reasons.

I wouldn't use Windows Backup or any "imaging" program to back up a data partition.

I'd back it up with a "file by file" backup program (Synctoy, Karen's Replicator, Second Copy, or any similar program).

The first backup might take several hours---subsequent backups usually take a minute or less. No "incrementals" involved, no images.

I also periodically backup my data partition to an external drive via eSATA by a simple drag and drop----I have measured the speed at 235 GB per hour, using a 5 year old Western Digital 640 GB drive. If my math is correct, that is close to 70 mb per second.

I don't want to do the file by file solution because subsequent backups would take more than an hour in my case. Windows Backup only backups changed sectors with the next backup doesn't it? Or does it backup the whole file again if it changed?

How many GB of "new" data would you be backing up on "subsequent" backups, on a typical attempt?

Frankly---I gave up on Windows Backup for reasons similar to what you are seeing. It is not easily understood and has its own peculiarities. If you are willing to ascend its learning curve and deal with its peculiarities, be my guest.

And I don't like the idea of "incrementals". If my file is new or has changed, back it up in its entirety on each backup.
