Repair your computer not working, recovery discs not working

Hi,
I have a dell inspiron N5050 with windows 7 home premium. Since installing a windows update I have been unable to log on to windows normally without it freezing. Safe mode still works however so I tried a restore point but it still froze when I try to log in. I don't have any other restore points so I wanted to restore it to the way it was when I first bought it hopefully by using the recovery partition. But when I press F8 on start up and click on repair your computer it just loads windows normally. I then tried to use the recovery cd but get the message winload.exe is corrupt or cannot be found. So having looked around the internet I found something to do with the bcdedit being wrong or needs to be changed so I wondered if anybody could tell me what was wrong as I don't really understand it.
